Scary as it seems, i may be spending more than a few months in this lovely part of Surrey, but the upside is i can get a 3-bed house with decent parking space for a little over 1 grand per month. So what else can you get up to a budget of £1500'ish that's within walking distance of a line to London?

[don't really like these new P&P sub-divisions frown]

No, nor do I, you miss lots of threads by having to jump around.

Have you looked at rightmove.co.uk? Pretty useful to find lots of places around an area. Try Raynes Park, New Malden, you might get luck in those parts.

Yep, New Malden is much nicer. I suppose it's worth spending £200 or so more and not get a cap in my *ss on my daily commute.

That'd be novel in Tolworth, to be fair.

How about Ewell Village?

The nolvelty might wear off very quickly. Ewell Village seems better value, though i will lose the (more) direct trains to Epsom during peak.

I don't know much about public transport in the area (how uncouth); I'm sure one of the other PHers can help as there are a few in the Epsom/Ewell area.

No worries. I've spent a few years in Epsom - just never bothered to venture round to surrounding towns - though one can gauge an area by the type of people who use public transport. Ewell fared well in the relatively low proportion of knuckle-draggers who got into my train; it's not quite as handy for the A3 as New Malden. In any case, not sure how long i will need to rent, but i don't want to live next to Wayne/Waynetta (or their ethno-diverse equivalents) for any longer than i can bare.

I know what you mean. And, yes, New Malden is good for commuting. You could drive there and park in the local roads to the station. I used to do that when I lived on the New Malden/Worcester Park border.

I would recommend perhaps Walton? Seems to be quite a quick link to town and its not as utterly wk as Tolworth. One of the worst places I have ever lived next to.

If you can afford to get something in berrylands, then you can walk quite quickly to surbiton station down oakhill...?

It's actually where i might end up buying, but i thought about renting somewhere nearer to London in the meantime.

Why?

Its still nothing like London up here, you might aswell not live amongst the 100 different races in Tolworth, and just go to walton now, far more pleasant place.

I live down by the river in Surbiton and its fine, but I wouldn't live towards Tolworth. I would take an extra 15 mins on the train and head down the trainline towards places like Walton..

What do you need space wise?

3 rooms of stuff, and i work from home .. sounds mad (or a waste of money) but i can't bear the thought of not living in something house-like .. obviously, i could bung some of this or rid of one of the cars but i'd rather not.

How about Sutton? Parts of it are quite nice (to the south of the town) and it's generally a fair bit cheaper than Tolworth, Raynes Park etc. 30 minute train into Victoria.

I see what you mean, parking is an issue round here. I mean for location and price I would rent something like this, http://www.findaproperty.com/displayprop.aspx?edid... some parking, (probably one space) is 1 minute walk from surbiton station, and has some nice bars, shops, supermarkets all within 5 minutes. You don't get that in tolworth.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&a...

Failing that, I would rent up here http://www.findaproperty.com/displayprop.aspx?edid... nice enough area, station right there, and doesn't suffer from the chavs, and bangladesh feel of tolworth.

To give you an idea of where it is. Good luck.

Oooh, garage and only a couple of minutes walk from Surbiton station and the nearest bars.

Built like ste, you will hear everything your neighbour does. Bar that it seems ok.

Like that - handy for station and low maintenance. I can tolerate the odd humping noises for a couple of months at least.

I can't stress how much more pleasant it is to live the Surbiton side of the tracks, so on that basis I would go for above house. Go in with £1300 and see what happens.

The only downside to living so close to Kingston is the car-hating Nazi council. You won't be able to have friends visit by car on any day including Saturdays and possibly Sundays during the daytime before 6.30pm (you'll have to check for specific parking restrictions on the council website).

Have you considered Teddington (it's good enough for Haymarket) £1500 might just get you a 3 bed with off-street parking, there are trains every 15 minutes to Waterloo, takes just over half an hour, so a bit longer than from Surbiton, It's a little bit leafier than Surbiton though in my eyes, right next to Bushy park, But you've got the river as well, pretty nice choice of shops, pubs, cafes restaurants etc too. Worth Considering?

You will be surprised shadow, some of the roads are quite lenient, I know my last place was well off for parking. That's what gates get you wink

But my new place down the road, in the St Andrews Sq area, is only monitored 10-4 weekdays and not at weekends smile
