I've seen similar scams on PH before. Buys car, phones up shortly after claiming that it has blown up and he wants some money back. Thieving scamming scumbag bottom feeders.

Yes, but did you go back to the seller's house with a bat and start threatening him/her until they paid any amount of compensation?

There's the difference.....

he mentioned he was a 'traveller' and the inference was he and his mates would persuade me to pay up.

Also, the money I paid over was to a tyre depot/garage in Slough - I didn't meet him again. So I know the asian guy who runs the garage is in on this scam. I never forget someone who jerks me over and I have already sent a letter to immigration about his workers. In a week or two, as it's dark I will pay a visit and his premises might have a bit of bad luck

I remember reading on PH about a guy selling a VW Golf, 12 months old low millage. Guy calls, agrees to pop over with his missues, they go round kick the tyres, say it looks excellent and ask for a test drive. Go on the test drive and he agrees a price to pay. Says he will be back tomorrow to pay up. They part ways expecting to meet up the next day to finish the sale.

Next day comes, car is missing.
Owner has keys and calls the police, police ask him to confirm he has the correct key. Turns out after the test drive, the potential purchaser locks the car, hands back what the owner believes in the correct key for the car but is instead a duff one. Potential buyer pops back during the night, unlocks the car and drives off..

Happened to my parents neighbours, except they popped back about 5 minutes later and were off

latest experience for me:

selling a 4x4 company vehicle, had it listed on autotrader.
at about 4.40pm (we close at 5) a well spoken gent rings up saying he is interested in the car and would like to come and see it, I say tomorrow would be a convenient time but he insists he by chance is in the area and will be round in 10 minutes.

a guy turns up within 5 minutes (clearly isn't the person who rang) and offers me a price £1k underneath what it was listed for (it was already priced insanely cheap, we had a replacement vehicle due and wanted rid) I told him there was absolutely no way I could accept at that price and he fked off.

The next morning a genuine trader came to have a look at the car and paid the full amount.

Later on that day the came round with the asking amount with the intention of collecting the car, I told him it'd already been sold and he reacted extremely aggressively insisting we had agreed on a price and rejecting that he'd offered much less with aggressive replies of "are you calling me a fking liar".

He told me that "You better go and fking get it back for me then you fking or you're getting hurt"

and demanded "I want £200 right now because that's how much it cost me to come and look at the car" despite arriving within 5 minutes of the initial call.

naturally I refused to give him money, he concluded by saying he was going to kill me blah blah blah.

that was a few months ago and no one has been back yet.

I found it fairly interesting that they have an articulate man who makes all the phone calls for them.

The "landscape gardeners" around here have a similar ploy where they have a local sounding chap knock on doors to see if you are interested in their services and if you want a quote he gets his "gaffer" to come for a chat who is clearly a gent who likes caravan holidays and communal toilet blocks.

Airline pilot friend of mine was "between jobs" and took a job with some 3.142 locksmiths doing exactly that. He'd go round door to door selling their driveways and "debouyos" would then come and do what they did. Said they were really nice chaps, albeit hard to understand their accents at times, just don't cross them. Said it was just like Snatch.
