Need a new mattress (kingsize)our current one is really past its best and I'm getting a crap nights sleep most nights. Like most blokes unless it has an engine, wheels or wires I am useless with such matters

Keen on a memory foam as her indoors likes them plus I am Asthmatic, are any of these any good:

http://www.memoryfoamwarehouse.net/kingsize-standa... If it is crap then not too much is lost.

Then I heard about heat dissipation being an issue so is this any better:

http://www.memoryfoamwarehouse.net/king-size-coolm...

I realise getting one online is a bit short sited, but there aren't any good bed shops near us, all are big chains that seem interested in sales rather than unbiased advice. Going to pop to Ikea tonight, but I gather they have a bad rep in regards to beds!

Any advice would be most welcome, cheers guys!

If my personal experience is anything to go by, don't buy from Sleepmasters. If you have any problems with it, even a after a few months, they're not interested.

If you want something firm but still with that 'sink in' and sigh feeling, get a normal mattress with an in built memory foam top. I've got one from Myers and it is immense, well worth spending a bit more on imo.

Ikea beds are funny sizes so other sheets/bases don't fit.

I got a memoryfoam matress from Dunelm mill for our sare bed for some xmas guests and they loved it. I have slept on it and find it supremly comfy, but quite warm, (had the windown open and it was -6 outside!) and they are proper smelly when new. A week later, ours was fine.
It was £300 in a double size, made by Hrrockses and available instore to drive away, (vac pack in a box with wheels). They are 11 inches deep, and I am astonished how good it is for the cash. To get something as comfy in Dreams, they wanted £1550!

So it may be worth trying a memory foam befoe you make your decision, in usmmer, it may be an issue, for now, we have ditched the winter duvets and use the summer ones.

For our new main bed, King, I am off to try a British based matress that some friends recommended, details of it is plastered all over MOney Saving Expert site it seems. They are made by La Romantica in Halifax and are pocket sprung with a memory top. This is the same style as thre dreams one I tried and nearly bought, called the "Chaucer" by Kaymed. Our friends have both, the chaucer and the La Romantica one and prefer the La Romantica one, which as it was less than £470 delivered seems like it is a bargain.
The La Romatica site is down but I found a link through MSE for Bedlum Beds in Herts and they list them. I am off to the factory to try one out, as tbh, we have wasted so much time in the stores, I'll just buy a Chaucer if it is no good, but the prospect of saving a grand was worth a trip to Halifax!

It is a flipping nightmare, but we suddenly realised how bad our matresses were and for the spare room, I am well chuffed wiht the Denelm Mill one. 3 yr Gtee also which is more than you get with Dreams etc unless you go for a (useless) aftermarket warranty!

Oh and I found out our Xmas Guests bought the same Dunelm Mill matress on Sunday for their main bed after three nights in ours! Its only the temp thing that puts me off having another for the main bed tbh..

I was out looking at beds today and getting up to date with the latest mattress as it's 10 years since I last bought one.
I can't get on with the memory foam ones. Very strange to lie on. The heat issue is another off putting feature for me, so a pocket spring is my choice.
It really seems that it's a case of you get what you pay for with the mattress. I was hoping to spend less than £500 but now I realise that I need to double that for a quality item. Ouch! considering the amount of time I spend in bed though, I reckon that it's money well spent.

We had a memory foam mattress until 3mths ago, For the first few years(had it around 4yrs) it was good to sleep on but a bit warm for me.
Over the last year to 18mths my back was getting really bad-sciaticia etc- changed the mattress to a harrison topaz-pocket spring, also they made it firm on one half and medium on the other, as that was what we preffered when we tested it, back problem now all gone I can get up and walk around like a 40yr old not an oldman now first thing in the morning.

The problem with ours was it was a vacume packed mattress, half memory foam and hale reflex foam, when sleeping you sink into the mattress and it was not allowing my back to relax at night but keeping me in one postion and also when turning over as you were slightly sunk into it, it put more strain on my back.

have a look here for loads of info http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/ search for mattress, a guy called tim deegan is the resident expert.

good luck

Brilliant cheers for all the advice !! Passed some of it on to some colleagues who are also looking at beds.

In the end yesterday after another horrid nights sleep I took a rash decision bought this online:

http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/sol/shop/home_and_gard...

Along with a memory foam mattress topper from local shop for £80 with pillows

I know its cheap but for £100 for the mattress (free del) if its not up to the job then Ill make an effort to get a whole new bed and its not much lost!

Tried the memory foam topper last night on the old crap mattress and I can say most of what people said runs true. I'm glad I didnt get a whole foam mattress!! It does seem to insulate you, which generates heat, great in cold will be a pain in summer so will prbs not use then. DOes kind of support your whole body but isn't for everyone and after a few hours sleeping I did feel uncomfortable, the misses loves it tho! for £80 for a topper it seems worthwhile.

I can't help thinking that the best mattress is really the tried and tested sprung version, and everything else is a gimmick to add value.

Having had a poncey Sleepmasters £400 'topped' mattress subside after only four months and unusable after six months, I'm off to buy a boggo sprung mattress for £100 or so and I'm sure it will be much better.

I bought this and it's the best mattress I've ever had. They also do a memory foam topped version here

Very intersting. How long have you had it? Do you have to turn it and if so how often? Has there been any sign of settlement?

I need to make a quick decision!

The included instructions advise flipping and turning it every week for the first few weeks, then every 6 months or so afterwards. It's settled a bit, but is still even - I've had it for 4 or 5 months now.

Thanks very much for that... it was the 'sumptuous upholstery' bit that gave me concern. Mine subsided so badly that I can't even sleep to one side as there's a 20 degree slope rolling you back to the middle. Hope yours lasts better!

Well it's a bit OT but to finish the story - I went back to Sleepmasters and got an ex-display foam jobbie with springs in the middle for £200. Not a blinding deal but they only had two spare and I was in a bit of a corner.

It seems remarkably 'used' for an ex-display model and on unzipping the cover seems to be no more than a box of foam badly glued together with a layer of tiny pocket springs in the middle (1,000 apparently). Hardly worth £200 but I guess that's how they make money frown

have a dodgy back and can't recommend memory foam highly enough. mine came from warren evans. biggest downside is once you're used to it, when you sleep elsewhere your back groans something wicked.

Yes they do have insulating qualities that makes a quilted mattress cover a absolute must, and am on the lookout for an extra-thick cover esp. for the summer, if anyone has any ideas.
