Toolstation is pretty reasonable for most stuff.

But compared to what my mate who's a sparky gets, its expensive! He works on prices at about 20-30% less on small items, and 40% on larger items. Obviously the VAT comes off too.

Depends what it is, a lot of stuff can be keenly priced but some odd things are twice the price.

I use screwfix a bit for the ability to drop in at 7 or so and grab a few bits then beat all the traffic, dippy school mum panzerwagons etc and be on the job before 8, when many "proper" wholesalers are still gawping through their locked doors staring down the queue outside for having the temerity to want to buy stuff so early.

The best places to get trade prices, unsurprisingly, is trade outlets.

They do tend to be a bit 'specific' in some cases though. For example, I use Travis for timber and building type stuff, Edwardes for electricals, PTS for plumbers bits and Brewers for paint.

For example, I use Travis for lots of my gear. I bought a makita brushless impact driver there, and someone on here got it plus some other gadget for the price I paid. However, it was right there - no fecking about with delivery. When dealing with them, it helps to have an idea of what you need and over what time period. I spent a couple of train journeys working out what I needed and gave them the list for a quote. They then set me up an account (but with no credit facility as yet), with a good overall discount over list, and specific prices for the items on the list. They deliver free of charge.

This also applies to the others - if you go with a list and ask for a quote, they'll more than likely (if there's a proper quantity) toddle off into the back and come back with something reasonable.

I find screwfix just so amateurish now, frankly.

Screwfix are only cheap if you buy their special offers (a bit like the big supermarkets compared to Lidl and Aldi) or if you have a massive account where you are getting rebate etc. Just going in to buy tools then your are probably paying more then you need to.
