I am having new wooden gates installed; oak posts and iroko gates.

I wish to treat them with a stain/preservative but am overwhelmed by the choices available.

Danish oil, tung oil, linseed oil (boiled or raw), Sikkens, Sadolin etc etc.

What is the best way to protect the timber from the elements and enhance the natural beauty of the wood? I want something that highlights the grain but keeps the water out. I was thinking three coats of Danish oil...am I missing something better?

Thanks

I always reccomend Sikkens and use it on all my external joinery including timber gates.

Its brilliant woodstain easy to paint on has the consistancy of water just watch for any run marks whilst painting.

http://www.decoratingdirect.co.uk/viewprod/s/SIKHL... for the base coat.

http://www.decoratingdirect.co.uk/viewprod/s/SIKFI... for the top coats.

I should by now be getting shares in the stuff! biggrin

Thanks. I've been recommended Sikkens a few times so I will read up on their products some more. Not cheap, though!

Make that three for Sikkens, my StepFather is a retired painter and decorator and swears by the stuff.

I know Sikkens is good, as is Sadolin, and both are readily available. I came across Jotun products some years ago, while working for a housing association, and was impressed by the service life of their products. I have Iroko gates, which have now been outside for three years, painted with three coats of Jotun Butinox 1 and frankly I cannot see any deterioration. Again, not cheap, but compared to the price of the gates, well worth it. You'll need to do some searching to find a supplier.

Sikkens or Osmo.

Both very good but I prefer Sikkens.

After care - after initially using the basecoat and topcoat, does one subsequently retreat with the topcoat or both ? (every few years)

If it's intact then just a couple of top coats. Base coat is for bare wood only.

Si9kkens every time. OK it's a bit on the expensive side but you don't have to re-treat it very often, I'm about to recoat my 3 year old cedar doors and to be honest they don't really need it but I feel that I should.

Hi,

I've been reading this thread with great interest.
After reading it all I recently purchased Sikkens Cetol HLS Plus Woodstain and Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 Plus and would appreciate some advice if possible. I purchased this to preserve and stain Iroko hardwood decking that has only been kiln dried treated. So far I have been putting a coat of HLS Plus on all sides then 3 coats of of Filter 7 Plus again on all sides. Because the recommended recoat time is 24 hours for the Filter Plus 7 this is taking an awful long time to get done. Can you advise if 3 coats of the Filter 7 Plus is really necessary for the underside of the decking as this will be weathered a lot less than the top side of each strip?

Thank you for any advice you might be able to throw my way.

Iain.
