Had a BBQ the other day with a new gas cylinder. It would not fit underneath the BBQ, so I had to pull the gas pipe out to the back which was not really long enough and connect the cylinder on an angle. The pipe and the cylinder were touching the drip tray, but didn't think it would get that hot.

Checked it about 1 hour later and saw the following, would it have just blown up if left for a few more minutes? Thank God I checked it.

Off to Cheltenham races now,, lets hope my luck continues...

An inevitable consequence of your username I'd say.

Luck escape I'd say - you'll be screwed when you take that back for a refill.

It's brillant. Had one last New Year's at a mates farm - we'd gone over to play on the snow down his long sloping fields - stood in the snow eating hot sausages and fried onions wrapped in a slice of bread - fantastic, why the hell do we have them in hot weather?!

Think yourself lucky

looks to me that all that happened is that the plastic surround to the gas canister melted a bit?

is there any damage to the hose or just some green plastic on it?

I don't think it would have exploded - the actual cylinder is steel, that melted bit is just a handle. You might have got a nice jet of flame from the end of that hose if it had melted through, though.

ok so there would have been a small flame (perhaps) from the hole in the hose. it's highly unlikely that the cylinder would have exploded.

And inside it is a metal canister, plastic cant hold the pressure, its just to make the bottle look nice.

I don't think you could make a gas canister out of plastic, they have to be immensely strong to take the pressure.

Glass fibre composite pressure vessel, plastic casing and handle to protect it. LPG can be entertaining if it goes off, OP should search youtube for "BLEVE".

Propane has a pressure of 100 - 150psi, interesting they use GF for that!

No it isn't:

Nothing wrong with using composites for pressure vessels.
