Fence security : What can you use ??
Discussion
What is acceptable,( in the eyes of the Law,) with regard to putting 'security items' on the top of a fence. A fence that surrounds a domestic property, and is intended to stop the local youths climbing over to make a short cut across gardens and private land.
If barbed wire, (or similar), is fitted, is that legal, or can some youth take you to court if they get injured whislt climbing over the fence ??
I also thought about the burglar type paint that comes off the fence and end up all over your clothes.
Any advice or suggestions ??

Fence is 6 foot 6 inches high. It forms the boundry between the private land and a walkway thats for public use.
If some security items were fitted to the 'private' side of the fence, no members of the public could get harmed by them if they used the path as a throroughfare, as intended.

Not sure that works, in practice. If they get injured being scum, they will still sue.If some security items were fitted to the 'private' side of the fence, no members of the public could get harmed by them if they used the path as a throroughfare, as intended.
I'd go with anti-vandal paint all over flimsy trellis (on top of the fence), and plant hawthorn and other spikey things on the public side.
OK. so avoiding the obvious carpet runner, barbed wire, broken glass in cement options all of which if some scumbag injures themselves on WILL sue you.
I'd get a load of 6x1 or 6x2 trellis which you then paint in either anti vandal paint (but get quotes first as the paint can be very expensive) or a cheaper option would be really thick old engine oil or similar.
Oh and a beware of the dog sign on the fence never does any harm

The fence requires something that can be fitted to have immediate effect rather that let a thorny bush grow over a period of months/years.
Nice thought though.
Trellis 18" above the fence is instant and will make it hard to climb over, a yucca or other prickly bush in the landing zone can be instant also, the rose just makes it better over time and with the right one will be more viscous than barbed wire yet you cant be blamed for a rose having thorns.Nice thought though.

Google plastic fence spikes.
I had to climb over a customers wall when they forgot to leave us a key for the gate. They had these things on top off the wall and I can assure you they f***ing hurt, even when covering them with a thick hi-vis jacket!

I would strongly advise not fitting anything of a spikey nature. You WILL get grief when someone, who we know shouldn't be there, climbs your fence and receives a surprise course of acupuncture.
Go for the grease or anti-climb paint. It will have the same effect without comebacks.
I would be careful with grease and paint as they might claim against you for any skin conditions especially if you haven't pinned the COSHH details on the fence.Go for the grease or anti-climb paint. It will have the same effect without comebacks.
Why not leave your doors unlocked in case they break a window and cut themselves.
