It does mystify/annoy me that people specifically breed certain dogs and people pay big buckeroos for them, when there are already so many shelter/rescue dogs in need of good homes. If someone really needs a fashion accessory dog then you'll never talk them out of it, but treated properly any dog will love you for life, unconditionally, no matter what his kennel credentials are.
I kinda agree with you, the dogs our family have always had have been bought as pups, but my girlfriend has a rescued staffy/lab cross and he is a wonderful dog. A Policeman found him on duty as a pup wandering the streets, kept him for a few months until his wife had a baby and they felt they could not look after both (Bobby the dog needs a LOT of attention) and gave him to a dogs home - luckily a Dogs Trust Centre. He is a really placid dog and didn't go mad when people came to see him at the dogs home, so was a bit ignored until my girlfriend and her mum saw him and fell in love straight away!

Some people want a *certain* type of dog, which with rarer breeds usually means you have to get them as pups I guess; one of my best friends spent £1800 on two Pugs (great dogs!) and a girl at work £2700 on two dogue de bordeauxs, crazy money i think. When I am in a position to have a dog on my own I would certainly be looking into rescuing a little staffy or staffy cross. Such lovely caring dogs and a lot of dogs homes won't take in abandoned staffys anymore around my area so I would love to give one a good home. Unfortunately I leave the house at 7am and don't return till 6.30pm in my current job so it would be cruel to keep a dog on it's own that long. Maybe it would be okay but i couldn't give the dog the attention it deserves.

Anyway, best of luck to the OP, he looks a lovely dog and it's fantastic of you to give such a lovely dog the life it deserves! Keep the thread updated with lots of pictures!

Bill Burr on rescue dogs. Very funny, but NSFW due to language.

That is very funny. Actually ended up in that experience. Sad thing is even with non "pound" dogs people make a bad fist of it. To get a rescue dog you must do the groundwork in and put the effort in and preferably be experienced beforehand. Can't be just thinking that is a nice thing to do.

Decent photograph of him at last! He finally chewed through his first collar, couldn't believe it last so long, so got him a big thick collar. Wanted a bright collar for him, as opposed to a leather one because I want him to look like a pet and not an aggressive dog (if that makes sense).

And he has his license tag as well! Which means if he's ever found he'll be returned. With a fine most likely.

Mange is really starting to clear up, but the vets not happy for some reason. We're pleased because it means he's not 1 of the 50 dogs that has mange all their lives. He maybe on antihistamines in 3 weeks at the next check up.

Lovely looking dog OP. I'd get a dog if we didn't have such a nervous cat and didn't work all day.

Quick update, JB is looking great these days, furred out properly now (as opposed to that rather sculptured coat you see in the photo), and on Thursday he got his first negative test for mange. He needs two and we can stop on the Ivermectin. His behaviour is improving all the time, but he's still very much an alpha dog (with other dogs). Couple of moments recently where other dogs have tried to attack him and he just gives them a silent look and they back off. This dog does not bark.

But last night......my wife was driving through Alabama, stopped at a rest stop, and found this chap.

Yet again, someone had thrown out this guy and possibly his brother/sister at a rest stop. No collar, nothing. He was running round a dark rest stop trying to get into cars that were leaving. Ended up with a good ol'boy posse trying to catch him. One redneck tried to shoot him "sir, did the dog bite you?" "no" "well put your gun away then and stop being a jerk". They eventually cornered him in a building. The posse never managed to get the other dog.

He's a sweet little chap, totally friendly, and unlike most Chis, doesn't have a massive chip on his shoulder - but he does have a lump on his rump in the skin. This is the nicest Chi that I've ever met. If we didn't have JB, we'd keep this guy.

He has to go to a home though, him and the pit bull really aren't getting along. Pitbull wants to play, Mason (as we've named him for the moment), certainly doesn't want to play.

With all due respect, I hope Mason is gone tomorrow. He's busy marking the house, and JB has tried to eat him (properly eat him) 4 times so far in the last 90 minutes. Both of them are now on leads so we stand a chance of pulling them off each other.

Well done OP. The best thing that ever happened to me was getting a dog. If I had more room I would take more on. James Robert will give you years of enjoyment.
The girlfriends Boxer 'Monkey', 9 years old and hanging in there

And my boy 'Kaiser'. Problem is they still have there nuts so keeping them apart is a struggle.

rofl Fingers crossed!

But poor little Mason; thrown out, rescued & put with a male Pit Bull, tries to mark his new territory & is eyed up as lunch!

No, turns out that for once in her life she wasn't driving like a maniac so didn't arrive at the destination as expected.

First week was quite tense. JimBob was just too aggressive in wanting to play, Mason was constantly getting backed into a corner and biting back and then the pit bull taking over in JB "wanna fight eh?". Result - me dragging pit bull off Mason.

So by the first Friday we were scratching our heads somewhat with what to do. Then all of a sudden they made friends, became best buddies, and then.....Mason started playing Anal Rape.

Which....they played for about 2 hours until they wore each other out. At least they were playing together, even if a Chi trying to fk a Pit Bull is an odd sight. JB though was not in the mood for "taking", but he enjoyed being chased around the house for 2 hours. They played this game more than several times.

The good "humour" carried on till Sunday night when all hell broke loose. Mason had tried to eat in front of JB, JB got seriously wound up, there was some serious growls, and Mason got thrown by his head across the kitchen. There was blood, there was upset wife, there were upset dogs galore. JB got immediately and firmly put to bed and I tended to the wounds on Mason. Nothing too bad other than a puncture would in his head which is now healed.

Mason cleaned up nicely, but all the progress they made was gone in an instant. Mason also started marking the house again which we had just got him to stop. (We've only just got him to stop again a week after all that.)

JB eventually apologised to me the following afternoon whilst Mason shook with fear for nearly two days.

However, by the Tuesday night they had restarted the game of Anal Rape and things were happy again. Food bowls are now separated in a big way to ensure no repeat.

Mason is such a sweet guy, glad we kept him, but my God does he have a large pecker when he's aroused!

Here's Mason a couple of days ago. He follows MrsJD around obsessively so she'll be about 2" from the shot!
