My girlfriend came home yesterday after spending the day with her friend and her new dog. Her friend, a vegan, anti-meat eating, anti-most things person but also does so much for animals, strays, elephants, etc, a true animal activist. Anyway, she's now feeding her dog only vegan food. I'm not a dog owner at the moment, but is it a bit wrong? What's your view on it?

I don't agree with it. Yes they will survive but nutrition needs to be carefully managed. They should have meat in their diet for it to be properly balanced. How much does she understand about animal nutrition, what is she feeding thge dog?
As a side I hope your gf's friend knows that cats will die if made to be vegetarian!

If she loves animals so much why is she imprisoning one in her home to do her evil bidding?
IMO it's close to cruelty. Dogs and cats are carnivores. If you aren't going to feed them properly you shouldn't be keeping them at all.

We've resorted to feeding our two 'human food' as all the dry stuff we tried (save the 20eur per kg) anti-allergy stuff was driving them mad with allergies and after a week or two the wet stuff would play havoc with their digestion (diahorrea everywhere, every day)
Now they get daily portion of a general meat and veg jumble:
- Brown rice
- Peppers
- Cucumber
- Apple
- Pear
- Bananna
- Carrots
- Celery
- A type of meat (either boiled chicken or pork).
- Olive / fish oil
The main problem is that most fruit and veg are low in calories, so we have to be careful to make sure they get enough food. We usually top off with natural yoghourt to bump the calorie values.
They love it, and its not much more expensive than 'average' dry food such as Pedigree or Beneful.
It has also cured their allergies and made them enjoy their food again - dinner time is the most exciting time of the day in our house
Try the thick broccoli stalks for them to gnaw on,our Dachie loved them. Now they get daily portion of a general meat and veg jumble:

Just to add, the dog was an abandoned stray. Taking it in and giving it love was a good thing I'd say.IMO it's close to cruelty. Dogs and cats are carnivores. If you aren't going to feed them properly you shouldn't be keeping them at all.
The whole vegan thing I just don't get.

It is very wrong.Edited by Rich_AR on Sunday 24th February 07:39
I know several vegetarians, vegans and whatever other types like that who feed their dogs raw meat, as nature intended.
