Possible for dogs, but hard work as Bex says. Stupid on the owner - maybe naive - rather than cruel, I think. Suspect she'll realise it's too expensive and give up - perhaps guide her towards the ethically 'better' dog foods, as and when.
I'm firmly vegetarian; I have cats. They're obligate carnivores, I make some effort to make sure that the food they get is of good quality and has as ethical a source as I can manage. If I couldn't cope with having meat in the house, I wouldn't be able to have the moggers. Pretty straightforward!

Delete 'Happily". Cruel, no question.... BlackVanDyke said:

Don't have any problem with veganism per sé (in people) but I have a massive problem with it being inflicted on carnivorous creatures. Gluten/wheat/grain diets are NOT the diet that dogs evolved eating... and can actually cause a lot of problems for their digestive system. I feed my dogs on 80% meat/ fish diet with 20% veg/fruit/herbs minerals and 0% grain/gluten.
I think this lady sounds like a right royal pain in the arse.

Just to add, the dog was an abandoned stray. Taking it in and giving it love was a good thing I'd say.
The whole vegan thing I just don't get.
When my mum took in a stray she had to notify the RSPCA who kept it for a week and gave any owner the opportunity to collect it (in the event it had escaped / become lost / etc) before she could keep it.The whole vegan thing I just don't get.
He's fed a mixture of dry food and raw chicken breasts (£5 a kilo from Iceland). He's massive.

What, massive fat or just a large breed dog because if massive fat that can be just as cruel as a unseeded dog or a no fairer on the dog as one being made to eat a vegan diet.
I'm hoping you meant massive breed
Haha, no, massive breed but when my mum just had him on dry and wet food it wasn't enough. He started to look like he was wasting away. So now he has two raw chicken breasts a day as well and not only did he bulk up but his coat started to look much healthier. I can't imagine a diet of just veg would be very helpful.
