Just read (actually scanned over quickly) the Sky news report on the abattoirs in China clubbing dogs, quite distressing so I haven't linked it on purpose.

It got me wondering why this rich country is still so awful when it comes to animal cruelty, it hardly has any legislation on this! Some 10 - 16 million dogs are killed each year. From what i know before, the mass live skinning of animals is not unheard of.

Obviously China has developed in many ways, but way underdeveloped when it comes to this, perhaps the cruelist country in the world for this!

I once sold a VX220 to a chap from HK. He came and collected it and we parted ways. Fast forward a couple of years he friended me on FB. I thought I'd accept to see if I could find any pictures of the car at it's new home. His FB page was full of stop cruelty to dogs campaigns. It was pretty horrific to see the way these animals are treated.

Yes, there are lots of videos and images of extraordinary brutality directed towards animals.

So many cultural beliefs and attitudes to be overcome if this is to ever stop.

Is the argument here that

- clubbing animals is wrong
- killing dogs is wrong
- eating dogs is wrong

?

Three separate ideas....

How is this different to what I do to flies in the summer? I've crushed them, poisoned them, cut them in half and drown them.

Don't get me wrong, I'd hate to hurt anything fluffy and cute, and other than accidental road kill I never have. I just struggle with the morality of saying that one is evil and the other isn't.

Any unnecessary killing or torture is cruel.

Kill to eat, by all means, but do it humanely and with purpose.

I suppose there is a different argument for pests and culling.

The more pain an animal suffers, the more adrenaline is released and supposedly they think the meat tastes better.

So many hold "humans" in high regard yet we are a particularly unpleasant little species in so many ways.

There's a tendency for the west to recoil in horror at what happens to animals in other parts of the world that which we would traditionally care for as fluffy wuffy pets.

The counter accusation goes that we westerners have a tendency to lavish our fluffy pets with an overwhelmingly pampered life whilst leaving some fellow human beings languishing homeless on the streets.

You could tie up a thread for days arguing over these smile

Bit different comparing a clearly intelligent animal like a dog which is capable of building relationships and interacting with humans in a meaningful way with a fly which has very very basic intelligence and isn't much more than an eating/reproducing machine.

But then we do still have horse and dog racing still which aren't exactly cruelty free...

You don't think the level of intelligence has anything to do with it then?
I don't know, which was why I was asking.

Are you saying I should only cull the stupid?

Fluffy wuffy? What about the fish and snakes which are cooked and eaten while still alive? How do you reconcile that?

A prime example of this is the green tokens in Waitroses charity choices. Animal charities win hands down over most if not all human charities.

That'll be the well known "chav fly" then.

Do not buy products made in China. Write to companies and tell them you are not buying their products because they are made in China and the associated animal cruelty.

If we don't take a stand then nothing will change.

What about Lobster, Veal and Foie gras?

As I said, it's possible to get emotively tied up for days going round in circles on this one.

Don't buy products made in China? That'll be a hard one...

What's the difference between eating dog meat compared to say, horse meat? FYI not everyone in China enjoys dog meat same as not everyone enjoys horsemeat. I do agree though that inhumane methods the dog's are subjected to must be stopped.

I think thats the point, these animals are being tortured. I just googled some petition sites (there are many) and read some more stories. I honestly feel physically sick.

I like dogs - lets get that out of the way...

However, I suspect given the right situation, I might build a relationship with a pig or cow - not sure as never have tried, however eat them okay.

Yes killing should be done quickly and as painlessly as possible.

However, for me, if you eat one thing, you eat them all and that includes bloody horses, they'd be at the top of the list.

Wrong to club them, wrong to make them suffer...

Think that is all you can say, unless you're a veggie then fair play.
