Because my work/life balance means I can't be a responsible dog owner, being fair to the animal. My cats are far more independent.

I don't dislike dogs but have never had one, always had cats. I like the independence they show. A dog worships it's owner, a cat shows affection when it chooses and most of the time couldn't care less if you live or die. I quite admire that.

You can have a cat for 10 yrs, lavish it with love and affection, and then it'll move in across the road because they feed it fresh chicken once!

A dog is a master servent relationship, whereas a cat is more 50/50. The difference between a cat and a dog is the difference between a wife and a hooker. Cat people are more self assured I think. I don't need my pet to worship me. In fact, I'm not even sure my cats like me that much at all. I don't care, I have them for my own pleasure, I don't need them to like me.

To summarise, dogs have owners, cats have staff.
Will say upfront I'm a dog person. I'm possibly being thick but I just don't get it. You admire the fact that the thing you show affection to and provide for doesn't give a crap about you? If it was a person treating you like that would you still like it?
I've got a wife and kids who love me. Everyone needs some contempt in their life, to be treated like dirt, so you can appreciate love and affection. That's where a cat comes in. Nothing else provides quite the same level of contempt.

Cats are independent but choose to spend their time with you.

Dogs are dependent and require you to spend time with them.

There are many other levels of difference, but that is one that springs to mind for me

I'm a dog person. Grown up with them since I was little. However, we have had a cat for the past 6 years.

Really want a dog though

If you throw a stick for a cat,it won't bring it backbiglaugh

If you had burglers a cat would not bark and warn you or the thiefs.
Also I think they wouldn't bother if there is a dog in the house.

A dog will protect your kids,a cat won't.
Your dog will keep you fit and active.

Dogs are fun, but needy. Also coarse, dirty and smelly.

My cat, on the other hand, is beautiful and mysterious. Black as pitch, he absorbs all light. His silent moves personify stealth.

I am in awe of the perfect assassin.

I have always had both cats and dogs. I can't see any reason for that to change..

I like dogs and cats (and most other animals in fact). However, if you get a dog it has to be a proper dog, not a "rat on a string" type thing as seen trembling inside fashion models handbags; they are utterly pointless creatures IMO. Larger dogs need lots of space, regular walks, consume lots of food and produce impressive quantities of poo, and general require plenty of company. All fine if you can provide/cope with these things, but not everyone can.

I "inherited" two dogs and a cat when I married my wife, and they were great (until one of the dogs became incontinent as he got older curse). When they passed on, we only had cats and whilst they can be very friendly it's not quite the same as the kind of loyalty a dog shows. The we bought a Maine Coon and discovered a cat that behaves more like a dog. They love human company, but can also be left alone all day without eating the furniture or pissing the neighbors off with barking, you can teach them tricks, they like water (a bit too much perhaps...), they still do amusing cat stuff (like wearing a family size biscuit box) and they are a decent sized animal.

Yep, cat peoples neighbours have to pick up what comes out of cats bottoms, the fact cat people don't mind about that speaks volumes.

Actually no but they will feed off you if needs must for them!

97% of fleas fkhnd are cat the other 3% of flaas are dog, human, hedgehog, rabbit, sheep etc etc but fleas aren't really an issue if you take the time to prevent them!

Apparently when I was about 2-3 years old a local dog that lived on our road came running up to me (think lab sized) and just enthusiastically jumped up to say hello which, of course, knocked me on to my tooshy. My mum insisted that is why I am a cat person and not a dog person. I must admit that if they are anything bigger than a chihuahua I feel weirded out or uncomfortable with the initial approach. Perhaps that harks back to the toddler incident, who knows?

Personally I can see the attraction of the dogs devoted and unconditional love and I do like or appreciate them, but I just love a cat's attitude and approach to life. Its on their terms!

I wouldnt say no to a dog, but I would certainly want a cat too or at some point.

Must admit I've never found that with any of our cats, the first one was a stray, second was given to us by friends, next one was another stray from a home and the latest was one I brought home 6 years ago who had fended for herself outside for two years and really wouldn't have lasted another winter.

None of them have ever gone anywhere else and all were/are very affectionate. smile
My cat will follow me around, be waiting by the door for me every night and be right up for a cuddle the moment I wake up (or before if I try and sleep in). Also has no interest in wandering off far beyond my room. He does seem genuinely attached as opposed to just using my place as somewhere to stay
