I've been around cats all my life really, I grew up with them and owned one with my ex for a while, so cat ownership is all I've really enjoyed. I like dogs too, my gran used to have two and it was always fun to be around them, but I would never want to own one.
Dogs are smelly and generally dirtier / messier than a cat is, and require a lot of your time, whereas a cat only requires you feed it every day. (Unless of course they go out and hunt their own food, which dogs don't)
I'd be biased to cats because I've always been around them, but now I'd have the choice of pets I'd still have one.
I can see that having a dog would be a good sense of ownership of a pet, and they are loyal creatures, whereas a cat is essentially an animal that is living with you, and will bugger off to somewhere better (as my mums cat sometimes does) if there is a better deal at some lonely old ladies house in the next street.
The way I see it is you own a dog who is part of a family, but you enjoy the company of a cat who has deemed you adequate to live with because you satisfy its needs.
Thanks, you're one of the few actual cat people who replied to this thread!Dogs are smelly and generally dirtier / messier than a cat is, and require a lot of your time, whereas a cat only requires you feed it every day. (Unless of course they go out and hunt their own food, which dogs don't)

It's interesting to see that most other repliers are dog (or dog + cat) folk like me. Not sure why that is, maybe most other cat people are too aloof to reply, or maybe pistonheads is biased towards dog lovers but I can't see why that should be. And even you are not even remotely anti dog, it seems a conveinence thing more than anything else.
Anyone wanna admit to hating dogs?

You have to pick up what falls out of a Dog's bottom. That's enough reason to be a Cat person.
Yep, cat peoples neighbours have to pick up what comes out of cats bottoms, the fact cat people don't mind about that speaks volumes.I don't really hate cats and had a few in the family when I was younger but it seems most cats hate me for some reason, if I go round my brothers house his cats always seem to want to scratch me.
I've never had an issue with dogs plus dogs are loyal the only problem I've had is my parents dog seems to fart a lot when he jumps up on the sofa to sit next to me lol.
Also I had one cat that scratched my eye out it made a complete mess of it and the eye has now been removed, I won't show you the pictures as its quite horrible to see if you've just eaten.

I grew up with (big) dogs and was never a cat person. Then my wife wanted a cat. Then another two cats were somehow acquired. And somehow I became very fond of the furry little bds. Our eldest cat had to be put down in February at only ten years old, and I still miss the fat curmudgeonly ginger bugger.
I think we will get a dog this year or next, but I will always like both cats and dogs.

Not surprised you aren't especially keen on cats then. Was it an unprovoked attack?Mr2Mike said:

I wouldn't mind my brother was going to get me another cat for my birthday, I don't think he likes me lol.
Apparently I was told in hospital that cat claws also carry a lot of crap so are also quite dangerous as infection from cat claws are common.
I don't mind cats but after seeing what damage they can cause I wouldn't get another.
Would love to get a dog but my work/life balance means I can't. I do own a cat or more it owns me had him since I was 12 or so and been a part of the family ever since.
For the people who moans about cats stting in other people gardens in most cases it's another animal, cats don't like leaving sts in plain site most will dig a hole and cover it over.
It's hard to explain to non dog owners what is great about them until you have had one but as in all things some things aren't for everyone.
I would definitely get another cat in the future and if work situation changes would get a dog to, top of the list is a husky as the only dog I would get.
Some people are cat people, some are dog people and others are both pointless trying to persuade others to try and change there views as you wont.

I'm not a dog person at all. I find then smelly, slobbery, demanding, intrusive, often loud and often (depending on owner), ill behaved. They require much more attention and looking after than a cat, and more space (if I ever was forced to own a dog I could never own a small dog... ). I like cats because of their independence and affection. I've had Birmans for the past 20 years and they are very affectionate, but not pushy, hilariously playful, even into old age (one of mine present ones will play fetch for hours), clean, non-smelly, loyal and damn fine company when you're down. They act very well as guard animals, by leaping off the bed to investigate if they hear something odd (was alerted to a bloke breaking into the neighbours car by one of my cats a few years back...). I'll admit that many of these traits don't apply to many cats, and some dogs I've met are very well behaved and good company, but give me a cat over a dog any day... Oh, and I believe cats are cheaper to own...

Ideally you want a cog, or possibly a dat. It minds its own business, keeps itself clean, doesn't bark or stick its slobbering face in your crutch, doesn't need walks every day, but does what it's told and fetches sticks for casual amusement.

Soon I will have the perfect hybrid of a pet - the loyalty of a cat with the cleanliness of a dog.
