we adopted a 3.5yr old cavalier king charles spaniel last week. we know the breeder well, my sisster has a pup from her first and second litters. she has her eye and heart certificate from the cavalier clubs doctor.

on her last litter she had to have a caesarean section as she had trouble pushing, but she had four healthy pups.

unfortunately she had an allergic reaction to the stitches, and the breeder kept her until she was deemed 100% from the vets.

unfortunately i had to take her to the vets today as the top knotted stitch hadn't dissolved properly, but it was quickly taken out by the vet, and it just needs cleaning after toilet and walkies with diluted hibiscrub.

unfortunately the vet also pointed out that she has a slight st1 murmur.
were totally gutted and the vet verified this was the first time it was picked up. the breeder takes all her dogs there including the German pointers she shows.

she is fine in herself, obviously. and the vet assures me its nothing to worry about. but we've been caught out with the insurance. as it was within the first 10 days any 'pre existing' conditions will be void. as the vet has diagnosed this in the first 10 days it will always be void.

this is the same with any of the reputable insurance companies.

but i cant get a straight answer from direct line. this is only a murmur. she has no disease as such.

a murmur can lead to mitral valve disease. but this as yet has not been suggested by the vet. its not a current condition.

i don't want to pay years of insurance only to find out its void. but i know that the two are linked. would it be better to put money aside and take her to a proper cardiologist? because i now know the insurance wont pay!

so what to do? this is our first dog and im gutted. i honestly don't think the breeder has been dishonest in the slightest.

Took her to see a senior vet today. He was amazed the nurse picked it up as its so slight. It still goes against our insurance policy and any heart conditions will never be covered.

Not to worry as he said it won't be an issue until they can hear it more with a stephescope. After that its yearly X-rays which are the cost of a pair of tyres. Meds are cheap from online pharmacies

How is your 6yr old doing? Do you give any supplimetnts? We were told omega 3?

Pics to follow!

Yes unfortunately it will be enough for any ins co to put a block on anything heart related. It's good that it is mild at the mo. Ins will still be good to have as the breed does trend to suffer eye problems etc.

He is doing fine thanks. smile Its just fun trying to keep his weight down. There is nothing food wise special for him. I am more worried about his collapsed larynx which he wears a harness so that a collar does not press on his neck and also his total deafness.

It's amazing bad luck. Both her patents have their full certificates and they are currently fine.
Holly had her heart and eye certificates twice before both litters and this pops up now. We couldn't have researched more. She needed to see the vets, so we took her....

Still. They are simply the best dogs. So affectionate and very easy to live with
