So i picked up Simba a few weeks ago, and when asking about his diet, the foster lady said he loves chicken wings.

Now i give him scraps of chicken, which he inhales.
But can you give a dog raw wings- bones and all? Is it just a myth that they can't eat poultry bones?

My aunt's dog in Malaysia eats everything, head and beak included!

I'm off to the butcher to get him some beef bones for a treat this weekend, so was just wondering (i would hate to deprive him of something he loves...although he has a new found love for sausage)

The only worry I have with my dogs and chicken bones is that they eat them so fast they don't chew them properly and then they would get stuck in their throat.

We tend to stick to larger bones that they have to take their time with.

As I understood it, poultry bones can splinter and pierce the internals of the animal, which can't be very nice for them at all!

Raw chicken wings should be fine, its cooked ones you should worry about.

We give our husky raw chicken wings all the time. You got to be careful about feeding too much over time as it can make the poo's very hard and they'll have trouble pooping. She has a good mix of dry food and occasional wet food too.

Also feed her pig trotters, ankle bones, skinned rabbits, etc.

Just monitor the poo. Lol, we've become experts in dog poo and the dogs constitution. Haha.

Raw food is better IMHO, that is what nature intended them to eat.

Not fed my dog cooked chicken yet but do have some spare in the fridge. What's wrong with cooked ones?

Mine loves raw chicken wings, especially when the are frozen and straight from the freezer on a warm day, just like a chicken lollipop!

Cooked bones are brittle and can shatter. Raw bones are not brittle.

He's currently on a mix of Nature diet, and James Wellbeloved/Burns dried- typically the most expensive dog food know to man. Would be cheaper to feed him chunks of platinum!

His poop's are normally nice and firm. Twice a day, like clockwork.
I read that you monitor what you put into a dog, by what comes out of a dog. biglaugh

Hello. My gsd has chicken carcass's, tripe, bones as his main food. I was initially concerned about the chicken but having seen one if you press on it it goes virtually flat as the bones are flexible and chewy. He really loves then if they have the neck as well. Our neighbour who is a big deer stalker came across one last weekend with a broken leg. Best thing to do was put it out of its misery so he promptly shot it and brought it home. Our diesel had the liver heart and kidneys. A day later he also had the bones. Which he loves. He normally has cow bones but the deer ones seem extra tasty for him with lots of meat left on. His stools can only be described as powdery but he has no trouble going to the toilet. His teeth are clean and his breath doesn't smell at all.

Originally i was going to feed him on the normal run of the mill dog food after being convinced to go raw with him im so glad i did. It seems a lot better for him.

Yep. Cleaner teeth, better skin, better fur.

The one thing I would say is cow bones are not generally recommended by the groups we use re: raw feeding, deer, pig, lamb etc are fine though and we also feed whole lamb heads and half a pig head (except lamb tends to give ours wind!)

Also organic raw carrots now and again to clean up the teeth as well.

My pup has had a whole prey model raw food diet including chicken wings, thighs, legs etc. for 9 years, really great teeth and no doggy bad breath. Cooked chicken bones are a no no.

Had to go to raw, due to colitis with commercial foods (containing any wheat or cereals) & while we still get odd diarrhoea episodes, it is at least manageable, if not very pleasant.

Young vets were very against the diet, but they had a vested interest for their sales and they haven't complained about teeth or gum problems when checking him out.

Thanks for all the info- i'll start feeding him some raw stuff to cut down on the bills.

My GF is a veggie- so i think the sight of our dog eating a raw pigs head might be a bit too much for her biggrin
