Trying to get some info on Labrador health tests. My understanding from Googling of the eye tests is that if the sire is PRA clear and CNM clear then the pups are also clear even if the dam is affected/carrier. Is this correct?

I can check with my friend who breeds labs as I'm sure she has one who is a carrier but it is fine as long as she breeds with a clear male as you said. She's a very thorough and careful breeder so would not breed if their is a risk of a problem to the pups.

I was looking at labs for my mum at the weekend and the Drakeshead site said its fine use a bh who's a carrier so long as the sire is clear.

Thanks guys, that is my understanding too, but it isn't very clear. There are so many adorable puppies advertised where the father hasn't been checked. Obviously not all these puppies would be affected but still significant number must go blind frown

I would only go for pups where both parents have been hip scored and eyes checked. Where about are you roughly? are you prepared to travel? and how soon do you want a pup as I could let my friend know if you like. She is a vet nurse with qualifications in dog behaviour and gun dog work and will give follow up support smile but no pups at the moment.

Looking at Fox Red Labs. It seems that often just the sires are cleared and the dams hip scored only. Willing to travel to maybe midlands, based in West Yorks.

Ahh, she doesn't have reds, they will be harder to find, if you go on photos of your dogs thread, there are a couple of posters on there who have reds, one has recently posted some pics as well.

My friend is Bristol based.

smile I love the reds, not many around. I used to take care of a friends red lab when they went on hold etc, he was lovely. I helped them when he had to be put down as she couldn't cope with being in the room right at the end so I held him, my professional vet nursing abilities crumbled that day frown.

I hope you find one, they stand out from the crowd imo smile
