Home Clipping A Terrier
Discussion
Anyone have much experience of home clipping dogs?
One of my terriers (Jimmy in photo) is struggling in the heat, our usual groomer is booked up until October!! His coat grows very quickly and I think that is the biggest factor.
I was going to get a Dog clipping set and try it myself, He's a scruffy dog anyway, so I dont mind it being untidy , I just don't want to hurt him!!
His fur is shorter atm than in the pic and very soft to the touch, but quite thick
Any pointers?

Be careful; you don't want to end up with a dog that looks like a chick that fell out of the nest, like one of ours did after an over-enthusiastic clip (by a groomer).
I didn't know dogs could look embarrassed.
They can.
When we had a Persian cat we would get her shaved completely once a year as no matter how hard you tried she got matted and in the summer she would get too hot with her thick coat.I didn't know dogs could look embarrassed.
They can.
All that was left untouched was her tail, her head and her feet up to half leg height (we called them her kinky boots) she would sit and sulk in the corner of the room for days after having it done.
The MIL has a Jack Russel, Shiztu cross and I give her a haircut a couple of times a year. It's a bit of a faff but she gets a buzz cut and is far better for it, she looks unhappy for all of ten minutes and then is back to her normal best.
I also trim our Persian, she doesn't appear to get too hot but it keeps it in check, i probably cut an inch or so from her.
We got ours from Pets at Home.
Dave!

Cheers guys for all the advice
Got the lidl trimmer and was a bargain for 9.99 , sturdy and felt safe with good basic attachments
Started off carefully and a section at a time and gradually clipped the bulk of the hair off, he sat really still!!
Glad I did it as I found quite a nasty tic under a long section of hair , plus he seems loads better in the heat . Cheers again
