I know there's a few beardie owners here.

I'm interested to try and get a feel for the running cost of something like a beardie.

Never kept anything like reptiles, only fish.

Would be interested in knowing if something smaller than a full grown beardie is available ,with similar temperement and ideally, not nocturnal.

All pics and links welcomed...

I keep Crested Geckos. Easy to keep (they don't require special temps, room temp is perfect for them), quiet, lazy, don't smell - pretty much the perfect housemates!

This place is local to me, and I wondered if anyone had any comments on any of these as suitability for a noob....

Select Lizards from the drop down.

I can't quite work out what you're looking for. Something like a beardie but not a beardie?

In my experience, there's nothing quite like a beardie. They make superb pets. They're very sociable with lovely temperaments. I considered geckos etc but they just didn't have the cheeky little personality that beardies have.

Any excuse to show a pic of mine.

A friend of mine kept them and I thought they'd make good pets, and a sensible first foray in the world of reptiles. I'm seriously considering a bearded dragon next. The Cresties live in a terrarium (ExoTerra are perfect) and they like vertical tanks as they like to climb. They're usually arboreal and nocturnal (but very quiet). All they need is Crested Gecko Diet (although one of mine will only eat puréed fruit - organic fruit baby foods are ok but don't provide all the nutrients they need so I mix in the CGD with the fruit...), misting the tank a couple of times a day with a plant spray (they like humidity and it helps them to shed) and temps between about 13 deg. C and 27 deg. C.

My biggest is nearly 50g, the next is 42g and the smallest (and youngest) is 35g. They get treated to crickets dusted with calcium dust as treats!

Cheers Funk, deffo in the running as I think as far as room space goes, vertical is better for me.

Also in the running ar Rankins, but Im quite drawn to Green Anoles at the minute....

As well as the dragon (only real expense is light bulbs - you need to replace the UV bulb annually and they're not cheap) I've got a pair of Schneider skinks which are bloody brilliant! They are hysterical fun, very friendly (miles more so than the dragon) and seem v easy to keep. They climb out of the sand about 8:30, usually spend 10-12 hurtling around like idiots and then dig themselves in again about 6. Seem happy on nearly exclusively mealworms and a £2.50 tub lasts about 3 weeks and that's about it. Can't recommend highly enough myself

About 10cm long I guess....

Handleable or not ? Im getting the impression the smaller Skinks etc are not for handling but looking only.

They spend a good half hour most days snoozing on my head or shoulder. They climb everything, are extremely curious and very sturdy. I wouldn't necessarily suggest for young kids as they can move a bit, but they are easily the most tactile reptiles I've ever owned. Will add some other pics and see if I have a video anywhere.

Blue tongue skinks might be worth a look. A bit more docile than adult beardies.

Pretty much decided on getting a Crestie, so will update when it happens.

Have now handled a few, and do like the character, great fun.

Likely to be xmas time though.

I’ve a Bearded Dragon awesome pet. Main costs are in the original set up tank etc. Very low maintenance in my experience. Mines even toilet trained-refusing to go in his tank so I have to give him a bath usually in the winter or if he’s roaming the house in the summer he’ll normally log on somewhere……

Mine refuses to eat veg, I have a colony of Dubia roaches that is now self sustaining and just make sure they get loads of veg to eat.

He’s a real character too. Think BD’s are generally a good start to reptile ownership as they’re hardy and don’t require much looking after. I’ve handled mine since it was a baby, he’ll scratch at his glass to be ‘let out’ although I reckon all reptiles are ultimately indifferent to being handled regardless.
