Well,$1300 later and not huge progress. No tumour though. Bleeding is definitely from the bladder itself, but they want to get the results of a full blood scan before next steps. Unfortunately the tech dropped the vials so the dog has to go back again for more blood to be drawn. Likely a tear of some kind though,so should be repairable.

That sounds more positive. Hoping the news is good all round and she's back on the mend very soon

Shiloh has had a tough time. A fair amount of bleeding in the urine and many vet visits suddenly deteriorated into lots of blood, and a trip to emergency. Various tests detected a lot of blood in the bladder and she was operated on . However, it turned out that the bladder was OK but here was a bleeding kidney. Four hour operation and kidney removed, dog spayed, stomach tacked, and now a very sick young dog in recovery.

Hard to know yet, but vet is optimistic that she will recover and lead a normal life. Poor dog.

Blimey, poor bugger's had a hell of a tough start - fingers crossed for all of you that she's out of the woods with a quick recovery and bright future ahead.
I'm sure she'll be more than making up for the lack of goofy behavior soon!

Should know soon. Hopefully she will be fine. Would be nice to see her out on Route 66, being an idiot. All Great Danes are idiots, after all.

We've been looking into big breeds lately, visited a dane rescue locally and realized just how daft they can be. It's very endearing - we arrived with the opinion the cats might be scared of it and left knowing a dane would probably be more scared of them.

My Danes have been scared of slithering fire hoses, barked frantically at moving Christmas ornaments, and all sorts of other nonsense. Of course, you could get a Border Collie and teach it quadratic equationssmile.....

Ha, I'm used to English Springers, and endless struggle between hyperactive lunatics and being able to explain string theory. Our Poodle could buy and sell them.

Yep..looks like about $7k plus all the recovery stuff. Still, she is otherwise strong, so hopefully she will pull through and be pretty much good as new. Earlier in the week she was happily destroying dog toys....

Will be driving down to Arizona in a while and hopefully she will be ably to drive back. Should have a better picture in a day or so. Thanks to everyone for the good wishes!

Well...through a four and half hour operation and up and about today with a rather impressive metal zipper underneath.. The vet was very pleased with the result and she will stay with them for a couple of days. They spayed her at the same time, and did the stomach tacking. Usually would be done later, but only one kidney means need to be sparing with the anaesthetic, so best to do it all at once.

I will be heading down with the truck in the next few days and will post some pics assuming all continues to go well.

Well...a big scar from stem to stern and a rather inelegant collar is the order of the day. She is in very good from, though there is a normal problem of bladder control and looking after the remaining kidney, allowing the bladder to heal. Overall, she is quite lively. We are going to make the big journey back to Canada this week, so it will be an interesting journey..... pics from today...
