My friend's two dogs got together and as a result, her pedigree Lhasa Apso had a litter of 6 puppies where the father is a CavaPoo. The vet who monitored the pregnancy said she should charge a reasonable amount of money to discourage people who were not serious about buying a puppy, working on the premise that the more you pay, the more likely you were to take care of the dog.

My opinion is that you're daft if you pay hundreds of pounds for a pedigree model.
We got ours from the Dogs Trust, and a lot of the dogs they have aren't Staffies.
For an £80 donation you get the dog chipped and all jabs up to date. Plus (in our case) you get the best dog ever!
God knows what mix of breeds she is.

We are looking for another dog and so have been scanning the papers etc, dogs that as far as I am concerned are mongrels, and no worse for being mongrels, are being sold for silly money.
Why people pay stupid money for 'fashion accessory' dogs is beyond me anyway. There are more than enough perfectly presentable dogs in homes and rescue centres all over the country, all needing a loving owner.

Unless you want a particular type working dog, you can get as much love and faithfulness out of some unknown cross mix. Ours are all of no known pedigree, Heinz 57 Variety.

I'm sure they could not be better dogs just because they result from some forced mating of two other 'fashion accessory' dogs with papers a yard long. So, unless we wanted them to show off to some other fashionista snob of the dog world what use is some piece of paper and a huge price tag????

You want to give a dog a home. This dog needs a home.

.*bump*.
Our dear Corgi X rescue died about a month back and our CKCS is getting very lonely frown

As he is a bit of a lala I have been looking for smaller or same size as him. So I have been scanning rescue homes and dog sites. Quite shocked at the prices for crossbreeds. £800 for a Cavapoo! (Cavalier x poodle) CHRIST. You can pick up a Cavalier for nearly half that.

Our old Corgi X cost £75 from the rescue home. OK it was 12 years back and our other one (Cavalier) cost £25.

I think 90% of the dogs at these homes are staffies and all the small dogs go really quickly.

On one of the sites was a wait for it wait for it..Alsation cross Lhasa Apso!! although to be fair that was a mistake rather than a designer breed. I think he must have been carrying a step ladder with him.

One thing that did surprise me in researching is that the Cockapoo cross dates back to the 1950s.

I have two Cockers and while walking them a while ago i met a fella who had a Cockapoo.

Anyway he's yapping away saying he wanted Cockers but ended up going with the Cockapoo because they dont drop hair. While talking to him im stroking his dog and getting covered in dog hair laugh

I do believe that it's a good idea not to 'give away' a mongrel unless you're really sure about the future owners. A nominal amount of money will help to put off some of the more whimsical future owners.

We've got a 'Jackapoo' that we rehomed (not a rescue as such) - I don't believe that the fact she's a cross of two breeds makes her any less of a mutt! She's the first crossing, so is just a random collection of parts from both. Looks like a Jack Russell on stilts. I can't even be sure that this is 100% accurate.

I think the prices fro 'mutts' is crazy: before I got Chester back I was looking for another dog as I don't like just having one (always had two dogs at a time, not the same age or breed, just how it's worked out and I like it now) and Pheebles was getting lonely. The cheapest dogs I could find were pedigrees! Some strange concoction that has a designer label - £700 -£1100, pedigree retriever, £300 - £400! Madness.

I have always had 'mutts' and (until Chester) always rescues as I think there are loads of unwanted dogs out there and feel it's wrong to encourage breeders. I could well be wrong, I frequently am!

Saw a lovely dog today, it was a cross between a Great Dane and a Boxer - it just looked like a HUGE Boxer. Really nice, friendly dog as well whereas I am quite cautious of 'real' Boxers as the ones round here can be aggressive buggers (and one went for my Lab when she was just playing with her ball).
