We bought him a 'flinger' at the weekend, one of those flexible things for throwing tennis balls, he just loves it> finally we can wear him out!! Would recommend anyone with a 'full of life' dog to get one. £1.98 in the Nickle & Dime' shop. Buy an extra ball to rotate with the one you've thrown.
Be careful with the 'wearing him out'. He will just get filter and fitter and build up his tolerance to what you're doing. And you'll be making a rod for your own back.
Make sure he gets plenty of mental exercise as well as physical and that will do just as good a job.

I really apprecicate your advice. I'm on my 4th collie and know about the mental agility training needed. This dog is incredible, we trained him in a few days not to get in or out of my estate car without us first putting a towel over the painted bumper. My son took him out in his VW Golf at the weekend, the dog refused to get in the car, he had to pick him up to get him in. When we met up some few miles away the dog refused point blank to get out of the Golf!!! We'd forgotten about the towel but the dog hadn't. We got the towel from my car and placed it over the bumper of the VW and the dog jumped out no problem!!

With the flinger, at first he was dropping the ball half way back after retrieving it, within twenty minutes he knew he didn't get the second ball until the first was placed at my feet. He is possibly going to be the most intelligent dog we've had.

Sadly we had to say goodbye to Darcy two weeks ago, she had a congenital problem resulting in chronic renal failure. frown
That is very sad news crashley.
Indeed, very sad to lose such a handsome dog.

Ted now has a new companion, Toby a three month old Working Cocker Spaniel

His retrieving instinct is already showing itself

Ted thought he was safe on the sofa, but not for long

Toby is already showing an inquisitive nature and a strong character, I think my hands will be full with this one

What lovely dogs I can confirm that it will be a crazy house for quite a while. Oddly we have a four year old black with white bid show cocker and a brown ( liver ) working cocker puppy!

In April we moved from Devon to Yeovil. The cat seemed happy with lots of things to see and do in our quiet tree lined street. One evening we had a knock on the door from our neighbour who had run the cat over and thankfully his death was instant.

He was the wife's cat and came before me, our son and the dog so understandably she was really upset about it. I didn't grow up around cats and if I'm honest I began by tolerating him for the sake of my relationship but over time I grew enjoy his company. Our son is only 3 and was not upset but kept bringing the fact the cat was dead into conversation at random moments.

I did not expect it to make our 18month old Loki so miserable though. The dog would play with the cat and groom him until he got too rough causing the cat to move away.

So the dog and the wife were unhappy. The dog wanted a friend and the wife wanted a cuddly pet as Loki pushes her away as he cuddles up to me! A cat was considered but we decided on another dog that had to meet some laid down criteria:

-cuddly
-cute but not too cute so I didn't feel like a pleb walking it
-physically cope with Loki and his "play"
-ideally loves to retrieve so that this would help keep Loki close by for off lead walks (he's an angel unless off lead near other dogs or furry creatures where he goes deaf)

So here came Blue the cockapoo!

He's now 11 weeks old. Loki initially hated Blue but that only lasted 24 hours until they started to play really nicely. Loki has even started to protect him from other dogs that have tried to nip the pup, stepping in between calmly with his ears up in a "You fking want some do you?" style causing the other dogs to back down.

Loki is also still the top dog of the house especially in my eyes but the mrs and my son already love Blue so much.

Been away this week so the mrs gets her cuddles

Your hands will be full indeed! Almost a spitting image of my liver working cocker who is now 11 & still looks (& acts!) like a much younger dog smile
Having had springers, a sprocker, collie/springer x & now a cocker I can say that the cocker is the best (& worst!) of the lot - hope you have a long & happy time together smile

The blue roan cocker poo looks really cute, as do most puppies.

BTW, anyone that gets a working cocker spaniel must have done some really bad to be punished in this way. smile Love mine to bits.
