What a really crap week!
Without going into too much details, my mother-in-law has terminal lung cancer and last week started coughing up blood.
My father in law has dementia and also needs to go into hospital for a biopsy.
My brother in law had a racing heart and during tests they found a shadow and need to do further tests.
To top it all off, our wee Cairn Terrier, Haggis has had a swollen stomach for some time. We had her on a diet since December at the vet's request but she hasn't lost any weight! She went in for further tests on Friday and an x-ray has shown a growth, around the size of a small balloon in her stomach area - they suspect it may be on her spleen.
The growth has pushed her intestines up into the top of her cavity. The vet was amazed she could still eat, poo and was still pretty lively.
We had her home over the weekend and she is now away into the Royal Dick Vet for more tests and an op.
She is only 7 and I so hope she pulls through this and the growth is benign. I don't know how much more bad news my Mrs can take, and wee Haggis will leave such a hole if she doesn't pull through.
Need to try and stay positive - she is a stubborn wee bugger and a fighter so fingers crossed.

The good news is a lot of splenic tumours (esp in small dogs) are often benign and successfully removed. I assuming given the length of time this has potentially been going on for the more likely it will be benign. We once removed a 4.5lb tumour from a 16lb dog and she did remarkably well.
Very worrying for you I know but Haggis is going to get the best of treatment at the referral vets, my thoughts are with you and good luck thoughts for Haggis for a smooth and uneventful treatment and recovery.

She has come through the op OK!!
They removed a 2.3kg mass from a dog that weighed 8.8kg - she now has a waist again
She will be kept in intensive care overnight to monitor her but she has come round from her anaesthetic well.
They still need to check the mass to see if it is cancerous but fingers crossed and she is through the worst part for the moment.
So relieved.
Thanks again,
Steven
