Just walked up the drive and there's a baby sparrow on the ground cheeping for its mum. Any point picking it up or is it a gonner?

I know it's a bit late, but depending on how old it was, I'm assuming (hoping) you left it alone?

Was it covered in feathers??
If yes... chicks are rarely abandoned by their parents who will probably be sitting in a tree somewhere watching you. Unless they're in immediate danger (being stalked by a cat etc), then I'd leave alone... they can 'live' out the nest for a couple of days during which time their flight feathers will continue to develop until they can fly themselves away.

If no...I think the only exception is if they are very very young (and bald) and clearly too young to be hopping around, then yes you can put it back in the nest if you are 100% sure which nest it came from.

If it's still there now, take it in for the night lest it be picked off by cats / foxes in a cardboard box with lots of insulation to keep it warm.

Wear gloves as to not get your scent on it, then let it go at first light. The mother will know where to find it I'm sure. Guessing it's a baby dunnock. These make a "Tseep!" call.

In the morning place it in a bush or tree and hopefully it will call for it's parents.

Nature is cruel, humans, more so.

Our cat brings home young birds, mostly blackbirds, every spring.

I just make sure the blackbirds have lots of mealworms, year round. Hopefully, it may weigh the balance in their favour.
