This is completely stupid, but when I adopted our Bailey 3months or so ago, I didn't think I/we would get too attached too him, I've never had a dog before but they are more than just dogs.

Our Bailey is almost human, he is honest, loyal, funny, friendly, good company, he encourages us all to get out and about more, and he is ALWAYS welcoming and happy to see us, if someone or something can put a smile on my face on an early Monday morning start...... it's Bailey.

Now you're all screaming that's what Dogs do!

Well I didn't know.

And now I've read the above link, it's very, very sad.

How long to fit dogs live for? I hope I die before my Bailey.
Quite, I didn't realise just how attached I'd get to my dog. Didn't think I could "love" the thing. It didn't take long. I think my stance is that I'll never be without a dog from now on. But do understand seb won't be here for ever frown.

I should NOT have looked at that, beautiful & so sad at the same time.

4 years ago yesterday (pre- ACG&S) I said goodbye to by best friend. I think about him everyday and miss him awfully. As it was old age that took him, we ended up having a week longer than we thought we would, and spoilt him rotten..

My Bobo....

Oh, as for Iklwa or whatever his name is, I'm not a proctologist, but I know an a**hole when I see one

Skipped to the end of the thread, part of me wants/ed to read it, but for those who read the Petra thread, you may recall that I said I was expecting to write a similar thread soon. On that basis I'll confess that I just don't feel strong enough to read the link. I absolutely promise everyone here that we are not prolonging Duffy beyond what's kind or fair, but she has still given us a couple of major scares over the past couple of months. That said, she spent ages this evening "killing" her favourite football out in the garden and charging around trying to catch her hated magpies!! She has very good days, some not-so-good days, and very occasional scary days. All related to arthritis and very weak back legs, and a couple of vestibular events. The scary days can reduce me to a quivering wreck, but MrsC and I have discussed it frankly and agreed that we'll never prolong things when the time comes. The vet is fairly sanguine about the situation (we went in again last week) and although agreeing that Duff has got a little worse, doesn't think we're anywhere past what anti-inflammatories and a couple of complementary medicines can manage just yet. Duff is happy pretty much all the time, we just have to take shorter walks and avoid anything like stairs/steep hills. Excess exercise seems to bring on the vestibular symptoms as well as knocking her legs out.

Rambling on here, sorry, it helps me if no-one else!!

Cappo, you are doing just fine. You will know when its time, and its not yet. You have checked with your vet. I have been down this road more that I ever wanted, but its the inevitable end to every wonderful relationship. Enjoy the time you have, and it may stretch out a bit longer than you expected.

The extra week we had with Bobo was such a bonus - the vet said it would make no difference in terms of his quality of life, but it meant so much to us

Our springer has had 2 strokes this year but now we don't take her out every day she seems to of perked right up.

We only take her out now if she looks to go out whereas before we just took all 3 out together.

I think that's a smart move. Odd how too much exercise seems to bring the strokes on. We went down from 3 walks to 2 a while back, and then to those only bring 20-30 mins instead of an hour or more. Starting to look like 20 mins is plenty these days (although it's been v hot!). Maybe we'll try the occasional day off too.
