How to decide the end is nigh?

Our eldest grey really seems to be struggling. Bad arthritis in the bag legs. Has been checked over a few times and nothing really can be done.
Now dogs mask pain to an amazing level, the back end goes most days now and she sort of stomps on the back end.
But she generally seems quite happy, gets excited when we get home and does the doggy dance.
Not been walked for months, last time we tried she was so bad i had to fetch the car after after only a few 100 yards.
So bad at that point we nearly took her straight to see Mr Heriott.
She collapses often, but seems so happy in general. SO am i a bad owner and should put her to sleep?
Younger dog suffers too as you can't take him out alone without her getting upset.
She's around 14 now and ex racer, lives in the utility room during working hours as we can leave the door open for toileting. Cant leave her in the main house as she messes.
She's a lovely old girl and doesn't look her age apart from the back legs and almost no teeth.
Hard decision soon. Advice required. Do you think she suffers and hides it?
She is ok for now.If she is excited when she sees you she wants to live.Have to make a decision about our cat soon.She is nine not sure if she has tumors on her longs.Vet gave her a injection to make her breath easier.When I took our dog to the vet for the last time if was hard.Small crossbreed terrier he used to have bad fits,I knew when it was nearing the end when I looked in his eyes.No more jumping up and wagging his tail.If our cat goes no more pets for me. Took Molly our cat to the vet this morning for the last time.I knew it was, she struggled with her breathing and not eating for a week.Vet checked her over again but nothing had changed.
I buried her in the garden and put a flowering plant on top.Live goes on we miss her but no more pain for Molly.

Very sorry to hear this OP, and Foppo. Three weeks today since we bade farewell to our old GSD. I've been sharing my experiences on another thread with other PHers in similar situations.
It is, sadly, part of the overall experience of having an animal, but it's none the easier for that. As others have said elsewhere, it can be harder than losing a human. And when they start to get frail, the time bomb thing is terrible.

When my Bull mastiff passed away we still had the two German Shepherds and I thought we would just stay with them.But this little chap turned up today half the size he should be and less than half the weight.So many Dogs need good homes and I like to think its a mark of respect to our lost loved ones that we help another Dog in need

Fantastic!If anyone like this turns up any time soon I would just love to offer them a home with our Otis for company!
We used to have just the one rescue Dog but we ended up with 3 and its the best thing you can do because they always have company.We have lost 3 over the last 7 years and it breaks your heart and leaves a huge gap and the house feels completely different .However just like when you know the time has come for them to leave us you will know when the time is right for another Dog to come into your home.
