Hi all I took my dog for his first booster jab last week (14 month male akita)whilst brushing him a couple of days ago I noticed a large lump between his shoulder blades which seemed to be a little tender when I touched it I took him to the vet and the first thing he asked was is that the area where he had his booster jab? which it was he has given him a course of antibiotics and didn't charge me for the consult as he wanted to contact the vaccine supplier has anyone else had a similar problem after a booster as I cannot remember this kind of thing with my previous dogs.Thanks.

Yes many people. Entire litters have been killed by vaccinations. My cat died as a result of a vaccination and one of my dogs developed serious complications after a vaccination (which should not be done unless the dog is healthy we subsequently discovered)

A lady called Catherine O'Driscoll set up Canine Health Concern - if you report it to her she might be able to help you identify what in the vaccine may have caused the damage and how to fix it.

And kudos to your vet for looking to report it too.

Chances are it is a reaction to the injection rather than the vaccine but your vet is right to check to be absolutely sure. These lumps can occur with any injection of any drug but usually disappear on their own in 2-4 weeks. They take a few days to appear sometimes. Occasionally they are due to an infection (if a bacteria deeks in at the injection site so antibiotics may be needed.)

My own cat had one one yr when he was about 7. It caused no ill effects and shrunk away without treatment after 2 weeks he lived til he was over 17.

Occasionally a needle hits a blood vessel causing a bleed under the skin which can cause swelling/ bruising but will shrink down.

I would imagine your vet will reassess in a couple weeks and if no improvement to treatment will take a sample of the lump.

Cream cheese? Hide the tablets in it and he might (hopefully) inhale the cheese and away you go.

Or I use lacto free cheese lumps, insert the tablet and lob at dog who catches the food and it is down in one.
