Found 2 big ones today, to say I'm freaked is an understatement, hate this time of year yikes

Terrified!
That's weirdly coincidental - I caught two massive spiders last night too.

I don't kill them - put a glass over them and release them.
Ooh you're both big brave boys. Well done.

Which takes bigger balls, dealing with something you're scared of or dealing with something that bothers you not? tongue out

Another one tonight on the bedroom wall, mrs chucked an ankle sock at it, when it fell she got it in the iron filling receptacle and threw it out of the window!

She has her uses.

it would appear that the big house spiders, whilst very cool and able to dismember wasps (one dropped the head and wings of a wasp on my had in the conservatory earlier in the year - which was nice) they are quite far down the 'spider pecking order'.

In the last 2 days one has been attacked and killed by a false widow which seems to be living under our fireplace, and another HUGE one is currently being eaten by a daddy long legs spider!!

Weird insights on this thread. Do you sleep in a foundry of some sort?

A false widow spider living indoors! that's a rather worrying change of habit frown

Was on holiday in South of France last couple of weeks and g/f shrieked and came rushing down from mezzanine bedroom at countryside gite we were renting - genuinely never seen her move so fast without a search for alcohol being involved.

I was impressed myself at the size of what I think (after checking later was a giant house spider) - biggest non-captive spider I have ever seen.

Liberated it onto the patio carefully with use of saucepan (wasn't sure if any indigenous nasties in France!) - not difficult to prise off the low ceiling, but took off at an impressive rate of knots once outside.

Being only 5ft6in tall, I can't reach any spider seen 'chilling' on or near the ceiling, so I long ago invested in a 12 inch long pair of tweezers. They're great for catching those house spiders, as the spiders are quite robust, and you don't damage them by catching hold of a leg or two.

Here's the most recent one that the wife (very calmly) requested that I "kindly remove" as it was catching her eye when it moved on the wall...

...that decorative coving is 2 inches deep, so this critter wasn't hard to spot. Once I'd caught it, I took another picture, to confirm the estimated measurement...

...so I snapped it against the shopping list/meal plan for the week. 8 lines, which measures as 50mm, or two inches. I think he's a Gnat's knacker longer than that too. He's attempting to fight the giant tweezers at this point, so out he went, onto the grass verge at the front of the house.

This one, on the other hand, wasn't found inside. I raked her up when I was working in the garden, so I trapped her in the kids' old "Mini-Beast Viewer" (posh bug jar) and put her back where I found her after I'd finished the pruning...

...each of the squares at the bottom of the container is 5mm square. At one point she escaped onto the side of our wheelie bin...

...but she was safely recaptured and returned to the garden from where she first came, despite the best efforts of the strongest web I've ever known. Next door's kids were out in their front garden yesterday pointing out a 'massive spider' to their friends, so I hope she's still about, as she's absolutely beautiful to look at.

That's a Bacardi cocktail jug that's in! Still shudder looking at it and was clinching my arse trying to catch it!

The OH has also managed to concur her fear this week and caught two of similar size.

It's bad, there is a spider living in the downstairs WC and it has laid some eggs according to the Mrs and being the maternal imbecile she is she won't extract it for me because the spider is with child (ren).

I have to take a piss upstairs or in the garden now.

WTF happens when these monsters hatch? I'm dead.

The Giant House Spiders are also one of the fastest spiders about if that's any comfort, they bite too!
