If you intend to leave a dog on its own all day then you shouldn't have a dog. It really is that simple

1) Lifestyle.
We both work full time.
Then you shouldn't have a dog IMO. I sometimes look after my parents if i'm working from home and it's left in the garden and is fine for the majority of the day but she will bark at times and continue to bark as she wants to come in for some attention. Your neighbours are going to love you if this happens every day. Plus it's unfair on the dog, they crave attention, attention you can't give it as your both in work.
Completely agree.

Having a dog is 90% of the responsibility of having a child.

And they never grow up and leave home smile

It's a complete lifestyle change I'm afraid.

Aaahh.. one of these.

She wants a dog, you don't.

In the end the two of you will compromise and get a dog hehe
Daughter wanted a PIG, wife didn't want a pig, I didn't want a dog or a pig. Sister in law suggested to wife that we could con our daughter by getting a dog. Wife hates dogs. we got a dog. 7 years later, daughter has gone to university and hasn't taken the dog. It's her fking dog, which she has walked 4 times.

Friends of ours love our working cocker, their teenage daughter badly wanted a dog. They decided on a working cocker, even decided on a breeder until he realised the daughter would bugger off to Uni or whatever in a few years time leaving them with a dog that THEY didn't originally want.

Silly bugger now has to pay the upkeep on a horse for the two women in his life, something he strongly told me NOT to do when we started riding lessons as a family a few years back laugh

I have to say that both me and the wife now quite like our dog, but are glad he's a Cavalier, and won't live as long as an elephant.
