We use James Well Beloved. We find it much better than Canin and Ukanaba etc.

I'm biased as I hold the franchise for East Kent: Trophy Pet Foods.

Pretty sure there is a branch in your area, food is good as RC, cost effective and delivered free.

I give my dog Lidl's dry food with chicken, £10 for 10kg. She's been on it for years and is nearly 16 now. Rude health still. I'm developing the opinion that all else is over priced and over marketed.

Have you considered working dog food as thats vat free , email skinners as they use to send out free samples to check if the dogs liked it

Chances are chicken carcasses and other raw meats can be cheaper. And healthier for them.

Go to any animal shelter and if you take home a rescue cat or dog you are usually told best to feed them on the cheaper food.

Perhaps it's so the new owners don't give up on the pet due to unexpected costs but our pet has been on the same grub recommended by the shelter for the last 15 years.

Unless it's an older pet with kidney problems or another illness that can be helped by the specialist foods, I'd stick with whatever agrees with the pet.

I order my dog food from this company (usually orijen and eukanuba) and their prices are reasonable.

I know the one I wouldn't touch and that's the sponsors of crufts.

Try this independent rating site to open your eyes, "royal" does not do it for me.

Give autarky a try,
At £19.99 for a 15kg sack it's really good value, wheat / gluten free and vat free as well .

I'm always tempted by "working" dog food as it is cheap, but presumed it would be heavy going to make up for the energy that working dogs burn

My dogs have an hour a day of exercise, but certainly aren't on the go 24-7 so thought it would make them porky?

We use Arden Grange large breed for our Shepherd and our vet speaks very highly of it. Royal Canin would be our first choice I suppose but as you say, it's expensive for the amount you get.

We have been using simpsons dry food for the last year or so with our gsd and elderly Yorkshire at around £35 for 12kg. We also supplement it with raw pet mince (free from local butcher) and sardines etc a few times a week so it lasts longer. Before they were just fed on cheaper dry foods and their coat condition and poos were noticeably better straight away when changing to the better food.

JWB is what I feed our Westie. They are a breed notorious for skin problems and this is the only food that agrees with him - no skin problems, good coat, no weight problems, no disgusting farts and no bad breath hehe

Not the cheapest so glad he's only a little 'un, though it's often on offer in Pets at Home and I just mix the bulk buy dry stuff with a little spoon from the wet pouches and he seems to like it.
