How I Got stuck With A Stray Dog And Could NOT Get Rid

On Friday went down to Blackpool to see the eldest & sort something. As I got back from getting something out of the car,I found him outside his flat with a stray dog that had just wandered up to him,and was getting petted. As it was friendly & not utterly minging,we took it in to get someone to collect it for the dog pound.Big mistake!
Plod didnt want to know, they had no one spare(Friday night+Blackpool,no surprise) Also they cant put it in their dog van in case it gave one of their dogs the lurgy(understandable) and they cant put it in their patrol car in case it gave a prisoner an allergic reaction.Try the dog warden they say. Great ,except none of the local ones work late at night(it was about 11) or even on the weekends! And the pound doesnt open till 10 frown

So we are stuck with her(although the cops did say we could just ket her go,no way we could do that in the high winds that night)
Also she was too cute & cuddly...see:

So my son had a strange Rottweiller on him all night, she was no hassle, and very friendly.

Next morning with still no reply from a dog warden we have to take her to the pound. She walked fine without a lead, and even jumped in the car no problem...the problem was fitting 2 of us and the Rottie in an MX5! biggrin
She coped well, not sure about us:

At the pound it turns out she was chipped, called Tara, but owned by someone in Stockport,50 miles away! Hopefully she will be reunited.Odd that no one had reported her lost though.

She looks in good condition - clearly not a stray.

If the 'owners' don't want her (and I've been shocked to my boots lately by the attitude of some said 'owners' - not thicko chavs either) congratulations on your new dog.

Alas I am not sure my 2 would appreciate it. At the pound she did have a go at 1 other dog there(albeit that one barked first) so maybe not good with others. Shame as she was an absolute softie! Getting her back to Scotland in the MX5 would have been a nightmare smile

If anyone finds a stray dog and can't take it themselves and no other options are available, just take it to a police station and dump it in the foyer. Far from ideal but its better than leaving it on the street.

Couple yrs ago a dog (greyhound) died of dehydration in police care. They'd forgotten he was in their outdoor kennel due to lack of communication. Obviously a rare occurrence but enough to make me wary.

That risk must be preferable to the one of leaving it where it is and it getting hit by a car or whatever though surely.

Maybe it's worth asking the council their out of hours policy, It may be on the Web.

Taking it to "the police' seems to be a last resort for everything, http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-2167... when other services "fail"?

Is it a 'Misuse' or a 'wrong call' of limited resources which causes hold ups and lack or resources elsewhere in the system? (See a&e?)

Would you call an ambulance if you need a lift home, or because you can't be ars#d making your own way to hospital many do, Then there is an outcry about ambo response times.

I've been in the same position OP via work related and it can take ages to sort out unless the dog 'just runs off'.

Depending on the situation the thread title may be the best option frown

Yes probably. I'm lucky enough to have a large dog crate at home so I would prob take the stray home until proper authorities could be contacted and avoid the above situation.

OP. Never again...? I suspect you would smile

I've done 2 people, a Weim and a Whippet in an MX5 (not regularly, just an emergency). Cosy isn't it?

I somehow doubt the dog has travelled 50 miles by itself. Maybe the owners have moved and not updated the chip information. Hopefully there will be a valid contact phone number.

Few years back I was walking my dogs, and a gorgeous Husky came up to say hello, no one else in sight, so took him down to the vets to see if he was chipped (he was) they contacted the owners, who were at work but lived a good 20 miles away, they had dog walkers who walked a load of dogs in my area, and despite being told not to let him off lead had ignored this and let him off. So dogs can turn up miles from home without the owners even being aware.

A friend's dog escaped on Fireworks night (silly flatmates left the door open whilst they did something or other). Took a little over a year to find her, she was about 30 miles away on farmland.

And alot of people think rotties are all killers!!

A close friend had a rottie, cody(rip), and it was a brilliant dog. Good with his to kids, who were 6/8yrs old when the rottie 1st arrived.
I used to take him camping with me and he was brilliant, much easier than my current JRT!

We did that once many years ago. Again at night. Cant fault the cops though, they were obviously busy, and they gave us the Warden's number, but they just were not at home

Either on Holiday,or an old address(worst case, stolen but escaped,so maybe only reported locally) The phone nyumber wasnt answered when we got to the pound

Quick update..called the pound, apparently the owner called them back but never came to collect her!!! She is off to the rescue place tomorrow.

Why anyone would not want her is beyond me,but if anyone wants a soft Rottie in Blackpool.....
