But you may ultimately be making him worse by not taking him if he does have a medical problem, and then you'd never forgive yourself

Yes, but if he is sick, he's hiding it very well

thats just it Ali maybe its hidden in plain sight? hence the behaviour change? i know if somethings bugging me or hurting i get ratty and irritable its only reasonable to assume he'd behave in the same way. Im not saying your cats ill but at this stage doubt you have anything to lose by getting the vet to check him over

You mention the cat was in its 'safe spot' under the duvet - You then proceed to put ur hand under the duvet and stroke him, No wonder you got a bite!

The cat sounds stressed by all the recent antics, it needs to be left alone to chill out during these times, not being 'harassed' by its owner (no offense)

You can read up all about cat behavior and body language online and how to interpret it and act accordingly.

Ali knows her cats well and his response to her at tbat time was out of character. She would not normally expect him to bite, she wouldn't have done else!!

You're kinda right, but so is Bex smile

Pepi usually runs to me, I'm a safe spot too.

In the middle of the spat with Beauty he'll come find me & bump my hand with his head to scent mark me smile had done so as he went under the duvet, so having my have there with him usually settles him quicker.

However, he did warn me which I ignored; but it is all very much out of character.

Now then, this vet visit... I have a 2 seater car. My cat box is for a dog so quite large (it just fits in with the seat right back on my husband's knees). This is so we can get both cats in the same box (less stress when we get home as they smell the same). I can't get 2 boxes in.

Do I take Beauty too?

The dilemma is that I would usually so he has company, they snuggle in there, it also means there are no Vet smells only on one to contend with & I won't have that stress. But, if he flips at her in there, we're stuck as there's no where to go.

Our old boy cat, Link, and younger girl, Lily, have a similar relationship. Link will suddenly switch from grooming her to hissing. Equally she'll be perfectly friendly giving him headbutts and nuzzles then go into full ninja attack mode.

On really bad days he'll end up so stressed he's practically frozen in place. 10 mins later it's all snuggles again. Mostly it's just a lot of noise though - rarely going beyond that but Link does tend to overreact. He generally runs to either of his humans for safety though and never lashes out or bites us.

We generally keep Felliway plugins going but it's just how the two of the interact - been like that since she reached adulthood (both 'done'). Interesting Link doesn't get aggro with Lily's brother Pip - he's generally very chilled about everything.

Could it be hormonal changes in either cat? We certainly notice that ours go through periods of more and less aggro which could tie into some hormonal cycles in one or other of them despite being neutered/spayed.

Hope you get some answers to your cats ructions and keep us posted - I know I'd be interested if you find any answers!

I think first port of call would be a quick chat with the vets and see if they can give you something to relax him before you pop him in the cage for his visit.

Maybe BexVn could suggest something / whether that would be possible?

My old cat Tribble and one of my sisters cats had occasional phases of "biting the hand that scratches" - in both cases it was their hip areas (approximately) that did it.

Started with no apparent cause and vanished in its own accord eventually.

I wonder if it's something like a pulled muscle? The initial fight where Pepi was scratched could have caused a strong involuntary jump, enough to damage muscle. And you know how bad a pulled muscle can be, no visible signs, and our bodies tense up the muscle trying to protect it which makes it hurt more and last 5 times as long before it goes away.

Try to stroke / cuddle the head / shoulders and leave the hips / bum well alone.

Pleased to hear we aren't the only ones that experience this, well, not pleased but you know what I mean!

Pepi is now on Zyklene am & Kalmaid pm, has been for 2 weeks with virtually no change.

We've been to the Vet, who's said everything we've done is right and that Pei is fit & well with no pain. She can refer us to a behaviourist but doesn't think that it will actually help as he's so timid he hides from people visiting - he's just a drama queen, typical of the breed! laugh

We're to up the Kalmaid dose for a month/6 weeks & see if that helps then we can consider ADs & behaviour therapy if he'll come out of hiding when the therapist is here.

Still, at least we know he's fit & healthy (& one of the most handsome cats she's seen!)

That is true, you are not alone!! Glad the vet did rule out medical, though that would have at least given you a solution!

Sorry I've been meaning to check on how things have been. I never heard back from my friend I haven't liked to pester (I know she has been ill aswell!!) I will msg her this weekend.

Don't stress her about it Bex, we'll just have to learn to cope
