Its hard to tell what size she is from the photos. I already have two pups but she looks adorable. If she is okay with other dogs then i might be interested...
I'll get a pic with her next to me when my next door neighbour gets home.

It seems as bizarre as unwanted British cats being packed up and shipped to, say, Italy...

I've asked my FB mates - she's lovely! How would you like people to get in touch if anyone is interested in her?
If anyone outside of piston heads is interested someone can send me their contact details through here i guess

Some of them do go to homes / owners they've never met before but a lot of them are just chance meetings via people who were out here on holiday. They fly back home and the dog joins them in a month.

Portuguese people do adopt dogs but their attitude to dogs as a whole is not good. They have a rather weird way of seeing sterilisation. They just don't believe in it. Also for a portuguese person its quite normal to keep a dog in a garden chained to a 6 foot chain, and never allowed in the house etc. I don't know why they have a dog like this... its not a pet and its not guarding anything either. Generally rehoming outside of portugal, or to expats in portugal, is the 'safer' choice.

Also the volume of dogs available comes into it too. There are far too many dogs here, we need to rehome at least some of them outside of Portugal. Partly because of the point above about people refusing to sterilise. And partly because the climate here allows dogs to thrive in the wild. If this were Newcastle or Glasgow the weather in the winter would thin the numbers down, but thats not the case here.

She's called "Jess" for now but she obviously doesn't know her own name so that can be changed to suit. She was left in the kitchen last night from 11pm till 12.30pm today and she hasn't pissed or st indoors. She was out for a 40 minute walk this afternoon and went outside, and seems quite happy on a lead. She's off to the vets tomorrow then I'll know a bit more.

okay sorry no more pics yet but i had her out walking again tonight. Her nose is about up to my knee. I'll get some pics tomorrow.

And heres a nice example of how portuguese see dogs, this is unfortunately completely expected. Update from a Brit living out in the sticks with portuguese neighbours. Taken from my FB timeline today frown

This week, just in my time line alone so a tiny fraction of the nonsense we have here:

dumped in a bin:

someone moved out of their house, left dog behind:

abandoned with something round its neck so tightly it nearly strangled itself :

2 separate litters, dumped in a bin in one box :

That collar one is a classic put on as a pup and never removed so basically slowly strangled. Also a classic injury for dogs tied up outside. frown

I just can't understand the mentality of some people frown

So sad, hope you manage to find homes for them all (is that a very skinny golden retriever?)

I don't trust any country that can do that sort of thing to dogs. People yes, but not animals.

The collar injury is common in America esp in states that make their dogs live chained up outside.

Sadly cruelty cases happen in every country. We certainly are not a cruelty free country, luckily there are more that care than don't here.

Looks like some sort of Flatcoat Retriever cross. This is one of my two.

There's a specific rescue group ( Black Retriever X Rescue) for them that we got ours from. They mostly deal with dogs coming out of Ireland (another place with weird dog owner habits), but I know they've dealt with dogs from Italy and other places in Europe before. I can put you in touch with the lady who runs it. She's very good. I'll send her email by PM.

You do have people who care which is good to know, like the fire brigade who rescued the dog....and yourself of course. Gives a small window of hope.

Some of those photos and stories are heart breaking.

My other halves parents live in the Algarve and have rescued 2 dogs from a rescue centre in the area (I think owned by Brits and staffed by locals but I may be mistaken). If you want me to get the details of it to pass on in case it is of use, let me know.

Not good news on this one, but I'm unsure how serious it is. She had been dropped off to be sterilised this morning.

"Just got a call from the vet. Jess has a breathing problem. They think she has parasites on the lungs. They decided it was rusky to operate so took an x ray. She needs antibiotics gor 1 week and have to push firward operation till yhen. They will explain when u pick her up anytime after 5.30 pm. "

I guess I'll know more this evening frown

I guess we'll see this afternoon. Felt a lump on my other dogs chest so I'm taking her to have that checked too.

On the plus side, I got a good deal on sterilisations - 10 of them for 780 euros in total so we've done a load of the dogs from a gypsy camp

Thanks smile

I've been trying to Google what the chances are but not coming up with much !

With no other info available... whats the chances of a 'lump' turning out to be anything nasty?
