Hi everyone,

Wonder if someone here could shed some light on this problem.

Recently my 3 year old female cat escaped my flat (so she had no way back in!) and spent about 2 days and nights alone outside. During this time we have spotted her a few times and she's always running back out of sight or meowing for food.

Luckily my flatmate managed to persuade her close enough with her favourite treats and got her by the scruff of the neck and back into the flat. We have put a cheap collar on her with a ringing bell, as she didn't wear one before (she'd pull it off, but this time we sized it on her to fit properly).

Since all this she's been meowing non stop. All night and all day. She's stood on window right now, making meows and sometimes these pitiful cries, as if she is in pain. She stops making the noise when she's given attention but was never this demanding before.

Anyone know what's up? Is it that she's tasted freedom and wants to go back outside? At my wit's end!

Cheers!
T

I assume she is spayed. Is she microchipped. If yes to both these can you not just let her out?

It does sound like she has tasted freedom and likes it!!

Sounds like she wants to go out again. One of our two is very much an outdoor cat. Last December when she was due her annual health check up we locked the cat flap to keep her in overnight so we could be sure she'd be in the house in the morning when we needed to get her into carrier and take her to the vet's. She went completely berserk ... all night! I think we got ten minutes' sleep all night. Meowing constantly, walking all over us while we tried to sleep, climbing on things .. bloody nightmare! Sometimes she'll happily sleep all night in the house, but if she wants to go out and she can't it's another story altogether!

Yes she is, and I would like to let her roam but can't install a cat flap from my window onto the roof! She certainly does like it, poor thing spends a lot of time at home whilst we are out and about. Maybe she is depressed - can cats get this? :/

They can become anxious and stressed, for some cats being indoors just isn't an option esp whe they get a taster and they can become unhappy.

She needs a feline playmate wink

I hear your pain!

Pepi is 6 now, he went out for a couple of years but preferred being inside, so when we lost his sister & got a blind cat he made the transition to house cat happily. Especially when we moved from the countryside to the town 2 years ago - not bothered at all.

This spring though - oh my ears! He's a Bengal/Siamese cross breed, you can only imagine the crying!

We're thinking of getting a harness & walking them both, but worried it might make him worse.

Sorry, I have no advice as nothing I've found works - other than distractions.

Our little Jake was a happy little indoor house cat. We then let him out and about because we didn't want the litter tray in the house.

He absolutely loves the outdoors now and gallivants around the garden and local area. I wish I could track him to see where he gets to!

There is of course risks associated, and his breed tends to be more indoor than outdoor but he absolutely loves it - I wouldn't try to keep him indoors.

Can you leave a window open so she can get in/out at will?

This. Get down to the local rescue centre and bring home some happiness!

What you need is a G-Paws tracker. Gives you this kind of data...

I presume the OPs flat is on the 19th floor, or next to a busy road, so that keeping it indoors is warranted?

I've got one of these! Gives a fantastic insight as to where your moggy goes. Mine has cracked 20kph on one of his outings! no idea what made him move that sharpish though!

Thanks for the helpful comments all.

I'll get that tracker (or a cat GoPro?) when Sadie gets access to the great outdoors, i'll keep an eye on her until she gets that chance.

As an aside... I think her collar was causing her to meow a lot, she's managed to pull it off and now she's gone quiet! :S!

Take the bell off the collar and see if that calms her down. Moglet is hard as nails (the feline equivalent of the powerfully built goateed directors that frequent PistonHeads...) but if I leave the bell on his collar when I change it he goes a bit mad, the noise freaks him out and he just sits still so the bell doesn't tinkle and meows a lot.
