Taken on a rescue boy who has had a bit of a bad start in life. (believed to be Mastiff X Sharpei and has been a bait dog, who was then starved, dumped from a car, covered in bites and fag burns with his microchip cut from the back of his neck)He's mostly recovered now and good as gold with us at home but it has left him a bit of an attitude problem towards other dogs and in certain trigger situations which means him having to wear a muzzle when out in public.
We've currently got a Baskerville Ultra, but we're having to keep him away from grass and fields with him wearing it as he grinds it into the deck and he keeps taking the skin off the top of his nose. Its an endless cycle at the moment of nearly recovering and then damage again. We've softened up the inside for him where it sits on his nose but he uses such force it still damages him. Not keen on the nylon ones and think a full muzzle is needed. Would leather be better or do you think the problem would persist? Any others to consider?

Poor boy - what a horrible start frown Thank you for giving him a second chance.

When I saw your thread title, I was going to suggest a Baskerville, but it seems that you're already using one. TBH, it sounds more like he needs to get used to the muzzle rather than a different type. My greyhounds sometimes wear muzzles, but of course they are used to wearing them from a fairly young age. As I understand it, you need to introduce the muzzle gradually, using lots of treats and for short periods only to start with.

There's a YouTube video which is recommended on the Dog Rescue Forum I visit regularly:

I don't know about leather muzzles, but definitely a basket muzzle rather than a nylon one. The nylon ones are supposed to be worn for short periods only (eg vet trips) as they don't allow the dog to pant.

Best of luck - would love to see a photo of your boy smile

All as moorx says smile.

Even if you went for leather it takes time to soften so would probably still suffer same rub injury.

What about a normal Baskerville muzzle, they've got an extra bit of plastic just where the nose is (maybe you could add some one-sided sticky foam to that?).

(Here's Monza wearing his - he was temporarily on a strict diet and not allowed to scavenge!)

Good luck with him, what an awful start he's had)

The baskerville ultra are specifically designed for the wider muzzled dog. I suspect the standard one will be too narrow.

Is he trying to get it off? in which case it may be a case of teaching him it isn't horrible, with lots of treats involved.

If he keeps trying to get it off i'm not sure a change if muzzle will help.
