This is Snoop Dog, my friend and pet tonight.
He hurt himself playing with another dog, today he has had his knee replaced.
I'm a bit gutted about this, he has to be immobile for 6 weeks and at the moment any attempt to move him has him screaming the house down.
We have boxed him in but as I am currently in France I'm not there, god knows how my wife is going to carry him out side to use the loo.
The wife and kids are distraught, the state he is in has deeply upset them, even though they were prepared.
The good news is the OP was a success and he should bet as good as new eventually.

Aww, knee replacement or cruciate repair?

When was the op done. He shouldn't really be screaming esp if he is at home. I would chase the vets to check pain relief is enough. Even re admit him if needed

He can start massage/ hydrotherapy/ physiotherapy as soon as the wound has healed. He won't need to wait 6 weeks and will be vital to speed up and improve recovery. The vets that did the op should really know a good one they can refer him to.

Wishing him.a speedy recovery.

OP was done today.
He is going back Saturday for a check up. It's a full knee replacement, he only yells if he tries to move, but he never normally makes a sound, even when he knackered his knee, so it's distressing to hear.
A specialist type geezer did the OP, not the local vet, he traveled from Tamworth of all places.

Have to say I am still really surprised they sent him home today! I really think he'd have been better to stay in and have better pain relief. I strongly advise your wife phones the vet and see what they can do, obviously he will have some discomfort but screaming every time he moves is not great.

You would have thought so, he went in at nine o'clock and the wife picked him up at 1800, the wee fella is sleeping now, the kids are sat with him.

Depends on the specialist. The first one we had the dog stayed for a day. The second one, the OP was done at 9am and I kid you not, at 3pm we were not only collecting her, BUT she was going up a ramp to get into our car - which the vet had asked us to bring.

But screaming in pain - I would speak to the vet about that.

One thing to consider though is that he might not actually be in pain but just "worried" about it. What I would do (been there with an 11 stone dog yelling for no reason you see and the vet call out to our house fee) is gently move the leg and see if he reacts (check with the vet first !).

Bless him, that's good. The vets can be phoned anytime if there is any concern during the night.

Be I got the 6 weeks bit wrong, the wife has got paperwork at home with a detailed plan on it, it's been a long day.
Apparently he's snoring the house down at the minute.

Was that knee replacements? I thought they were cruciates. We frequently send cruciates home same day unless any specific reason not to but my feeling is knee replacement is a bit more invasive.

Either way one person to move a large recumbent dog is not ideal

Surprisingly vets (even ortho vets) can be a little bit set in their ways re hydro etc! Strict rest for several weeks is the common post op guide still.

Correct both cruciates.

Fair enough if the knee is worse though. I wasn't sure if the OP was referring to a luxating patella fixing or a whole knee joint replacement. Either way, best to call the vet if he is yelping.

Makes me cringe thinking about it tbh knee replacement isn't an every day scenario!. I'm all for pets getting home quickly as it usually is better for them but sometimes an overnight stay is much less stressful for all (unless patient is reacting really badly to it of course')

Going O/T here, but I won't leave mine at the vets as nobody is on site for the full night. Somebody pops back midway through, but I would rather take him home and take him to the emergency vets if required, or move him to the emergency vets who have a nurse and a vet on site all night.
Oddly my vet didn't tell me that this was the case, speaking to a vet nurse friend this is normal for a practice.

Some do not all, my boss lives above her practice and cares for any inpatients on site. If she is away, a vet nurse stays over to do it.

Minnie was taken home by the Vets who treated her. Got on OK with the Dogs. She must have been feeling poorly.

Sorry for the delay, I had trouble logging on.
Snoop Dog is a thousand times better today, he's eaten all his food , which is a first, he's been off it since he ruptured his ligaments, he's lost over a stone in weight.
He's very stiff but back to his normal self ( for a Mastiff normal self is sleeping 23 hours a day, waking to eat and fart ), my wife is no longer panicking about carrying him , he is lay in the sun being Snoop.
I had planned to go out on our narrow boat for a week or so at the end of the month, I'm undecided on this, on one hand it's good for keeping him still on the other I'd have to carry him on and off the boat.
We've had a lot of bad luck with him, hopefully he will start seeing alot less of the vet and start having a better quality of life now.
Like I said earlier he goes back for a check up Saturday, I'll keep you posted.

That's good too hear smile. I'd be wary of the narrow Boat he'll still be relying on 3 legs more at that point, I'd be worry about him slipping on it. If it were a couple months from now you might be ok.

Prob see how well he is walking nearer the time then see.

Update. Snoop Dog is coming on nicely, he had a visit to the vets Saturday, they are really pleased with him, the would has healed nicely and he can put weight on his leg.
The only thing now is because he goes everywhere on a lead, he thinks he is being punished, also he no longer sleeps upstairs, we give him plenty of fuss though, he has another Vet appointment in two weeks.

Glad to hear the old chap is doing well, I read the op and then got scared and had to force myself to read the rest... phew!

My girl (Phoebe) is only 28kgs and it nearly killed me carrying her around for three weeks when she broke her elbow. She's now much improved but I....

smile

My sympathies to your wife if she really did have to carry that great lump of doghood around single handed!
