Update :-

I've not seen any sign of the magpie or any birds in my back garden since Friday. Do birds keep quiet when it's so hot?

I don't know what you are talking about re: decoys tbh. Due to the many hundreds of wild birds I have dealt with, alive, at the vets I know they can survive the journey and usually do unless so badly injured they would have died quickly anyway (rta's) but I know they can, I think most people are aware of the risk that it can happen. Think I'd still rather chance it than leave a bird like the one pictured without trying to help it.

Obviously if anyone thinks it is cruel to transport them then just don't do it.
Google larsen trap and you will see what he means when talking about decoys. It is a very effective way of trapping them.

I don't know really, We have had a (growing) family of magpies around our gardens for years now and we see them about in all weathers.

Magpie update.
He's just appeared again in the back garden. Sadly he wouldn't turn towards me. I have to keep well away from the window or he flies off.

You can see the object underneath its skin in some of those pictures.

If you can't catch him there is not much you can do. It is horrible though, does appear to be a traumatic injury with the fb still in place! All you can do is keep a\watch out and at the point he seems to get weaker then try and catch him then. Animals survival instincts are strong.

It could just be the angle but the object that is protruding out looks a bit shorter now.

Yes a bit worrying, but I'm pleased to see it's still about.

Not easy to knock a magpie down, stubborn buggers, not always to the good though!

I've just looked at the other pix I took today and it's hard to tell, but you could be correct.
I'll see if I can catch him tomorrow
