A young child may have more opportunity to grab and pull a poor dogs ears (which will hurt them) than hurting a guinea pig that is being handled and under guidance of a parent. A one year old is not going to be left alone with a guinea pig (certainly hope not anyway!) so will have much less chance of grabbing and hurting it than they might with a cat or dog.

I know it seems like an odd creature to suggest but it really is a good one as long as the parents are responsible about it. (as far as your choice of small furries go anyway). Having owned dogs and cats around babies and small children I agree a dog can work fine, it really depends on if the OP had any limitations on what they can take on I suppose smile.

A one-year-old doesn't need a pet. Soft toys will be fine - and cheaper.

Very good points Bex - I think I was imagining it would actually be handled,,,,but of course that's not a sub 1-year old activity!
