Not going to be going till next year now but I want another trip to somewhere warm and dry next year. We last went on holiday 2 years ago when Vinnie was just 5 months, he stayed at home and my best mate house sat for us. I missed him big time, so now we have a nice comfortable car and he's not going to st and piss everywhere he can come with us.

Which is the easiest and most comfortable way for him to travel? I really done want to be locking him in cages and stuff, anyone got recommendations, tips, pointers, ferry? train?

Cheers
Matt

We will be going by channel tunnel.

On the ferry you have to leave them in the car. Probably not an issue with ours but I'd rather be in the car with him

Don't forget to get your passport and shots early. Also you have to get him checked at customs on the way out and in and prove you have taken some sort of treatment for worms I think when you come back.

On a similar sort of question what do people think of the practicality of going to Jersey with a dog.

You don't need the shots but have to leave them in the ferry hold unattended for nearly 5 hours.

Vs train to France and then 20 minute crossing from St Malo? Which of course means vet checks shots etc both ways.

Bear in mind he will need a pet passport.

Ours travelled on the back seat with a car harness.

Having looked further at TripAdvisor reviews of Condor ferries then all those options are out, so looks as if he won't be going to visit the family.

What about the Channel Tunnel? In the car with you, 30 mins and you're across.

We have done UK to Spain via Channel Tunnel with our dog a few times and it is very straightforward.

Your vet can arrange the pet passport (from memory £40 approx).

Useful information can be found here:

Portsmouth-Bilbao with Brittany Ferries you can either put the dog in a kennel, or (as we did earlier this year) book a pet-friendly cabin. Not cheap but it actually worked very well, though it was obvious on the "poop deck" that male dogs were much happier cocking a leg than bhes (oh sorry swear filter! "female dogs") were squatting.

Tunnel, done it twice and it's a doddle, passport & rabies jab 6 weeks before travel I think, which lasts a few years. You need to check-in with the dog before entering the queue for passport/chip check then sit in the car for the 30 min journey. Coming back is a visit to the vet shortly before the return journey (within 3 days IIRC) for a tick vaccine (oral or jab), check-in before joining the queue as before.

As others have said - the Eurotunnel is pretty easy with a dog. Just get there a little earlier to get the dog's passport checked..

The pet passport check in area is to the right as you approach the vehicle check in booths.

You will need to do this prior to checking in the car/vehicle.

For me it's not the issue of the tunnel or dealing with the pet passports and the various vet checks and treatments it was more about people's opinions over the two routes.

The family out there refuses to use the St Helier-Poole service as it's so st / variable frankly. Couple that with the dog's owner (not me) being unhappy with leaving him for 5 hours unattended in the hold.

The alternative is the tunnel crossing which would be straightforward but then a 5 hour plus flog across Normandy to St Malo and more pissing about with another ferry for a shorter crossing say about 1 hour 20.

All in all have decided it's too much of a pain unless perhaps we combined it as part of a much longer holiday.

Interesting tell me more. I was going to do the tunnel then across France and obviously Spain to Alicante. With fuel and tolls that may be a better idea.

How much is expensive? It's approx 3000 miles we drove when we go again it will be in the CRV at 30mpg ish I get. Plus 150 quid or so in tolls can remember exactly but I have it written down.

Another vote for the tunnel. I suppose it depends on where you're going.

The dog-friendly cabins are all outside with porthole so are the most expensive to start with.
For 2 adults + car + dog + 1 week at a lovely cottage in the Picos, first week of May, we paid £506. That includes around £40 each way for the dog. The ferry crossing is lot cheaper if you book it as part of a holiday.

However - the dog-friendly cabins get booked up almost as soon as Brittany Ferries release them; you'll need to book 6-9 months in advance.
Not sure about the kennel option...

Please can I just remind everyone travelling abroad with pets to be aware of the nasties your pets can pick up in other countries. We are only interested in protecting the country from rabies as it is zoonotic but there are other horrible diseases that can kill your pet that the government aren't interested in as we can't get them.

Anyway lecture over! I would only travel if I could have free access to my dog during the trip and would pay extra for the ferries kennels if pop in and

On Britany ferries they will let you visit your dog (accompanied by a crew member) in the car every couple of hours if you ask at the desk.
I have found (depending on the dog I guess) that if the dog has been excersied before sailing it will settle down in the car and sleep for 5 hrs no probs

I might be taking Logan down to Spain will be phoning about the ferry but either way I still have a long drive down to Alicante.

I will be on my own so the question is how dog friendly are Spanish/ French service stations obviously being on my own he will be a big consideration. August so leaving him in the car even for minutes is a no no.

The little car parks with just toilets will be fine. I suppose i could just get a sarnie in the petrol stations when I buy fuel.

Anybody took a dog on their own?

I didn't take a dog on me own but most of the services I stopped at in France and Spain had a little picnic type area and I just walked the dog around them.....
