My condolences to you and your family sir. Very sad although I was pleased to read that the dog owner had the decency to visit you. How did he explain how it came to happen? Did he have an excuse as such?

When we spoke to the police the local officer was brilliant and said that it was the right thing to do to tell them as sometimes the owners have been warned already, also the fact that the police knocked on their door was a wake up call, again heart goes out to you and your family

Really sorry to hear about what happened OP.

I am a Greyhound owner if that makes any difference by the way........

Greyhounds are bred to race and are bred to chase for racing. Its something which is "in" them. They are sighthounds and have done this for hundreds of generations. Its not something which they can switch off so please dont blame the dog. They are not bred to chase and kill small children so please ignore the ott comments.

There is no excuse for the owner not to have a lead on the dog in public, and should be even more careful if his dog has a high instinct to chase stuff. This is something which whilst always a possibility is something which you just know about your dog.
Personally I only let mine off in enclosed ie fenced areas when there is nothing else about. He has never chased anything, lives with a cat, likes rabbits etc

Myself, I would be absolutely gutted if my dog ever did anything like that and you would hope that and decent dog owner would be the same.

My dog and I were attacked by a pair of german shepherds which were not on leads etc a while ago. I spoke to the dog warden and she said to speak to the police, which I did. I reported it for information only and no action to be taken, but its reported for any further issues. So this may be an option for you if you were in 2 minds about whether to report it or not.

Very sad story.

My cat was attacked in the same way by a greyhound which was not on a lead or muzzled a few years ago.
I am not directly having a go at you, but to play devil's advocate a tad here to prompt a sensible discussion about this.

Was your cat on a lead then?
Why would it be the dogs fault, just because it wasn't on a lead?
Seriously? censored

The cat in the OP was in the owner’s garden which the dog invaded, SSV8 cat was also in his garden.

How can the cat possibly be at fault?

fk me, I thought I'd read some stupid st on here in the past, but that really takes the prize for idiotic, insensitive, unfeeling post of the decade

Well the local dog warden has been informed and they asked me to inform the police as well given that the dog was out of control in a public place.

The children are coming home from my mum's house tomorrow. Telling them will be an unpleasant task.

I don't envy you that task... maybe have knowledge of the 'stock' at the local rescue centres to 'hand' as a distraction? You dont have to act on it wink

Read that back to yourself you idiot. That's not sensible discussion nor is it prompting any - it's just a very stupid thing to say.

The police will try and fob you off with any excuse they can so they don't have to bother with it, you'll probably have to start with the local PCSO or whatever they are called. Don't let them fob you off and insist they or the dog warden make a visit to the owner, it may save another cat or even a person in the future. mention the dangerous dogs act and your right to be able to walk around without fear of a dog attack. I've been through this although without the heartbreaking outcome you've suffered and the person was visited, the warden also made a few visits to our park and things improved, even if it's only that the person/people involved steer clear of me now.

Asking silly questions is not really prompting a sensible discussion though is it?

Do you think that the cat being on a lead would prevent a loose dog from attacking it?
I have no words.

There just seems to be something about cat threads that brings them out - see the fox hunting thread for more evidence

Also, my condolences to the OP, that is awful and I would be devastated if the same happened to my cat.
