Hi

We picked up our 14 week old kitten last Saturday and all is fine except he's not had a solid stool since he came home. We've not changed his diet from what he was on at breeders (Royal Canin kitten dry and cooked chicken) but every time he poos it's diarrhea (one average one to two a day). Otherwise he's doing well, full if energy etc

We've had him at the vet for a general check up and mentioned this - vet said to monitor for 2 weeks as it's likely stress of settling in as he was healthy otherwise (she checked him over fully). Does this sound reasonable or should I take him back - he has some fresh red seepage again vet said not to worry about this unless it changes from being slight and fresh red.

Thanks

Not what I would class as completely normal, a few days maybe and preferably with some solid faeces occasionally.

If anything fresh red blood is better than dark as it suggests it is just from the colon (due to straining).

We would be wanting to check for giardia and camplyobacter just to be cautious.

Could you get some sensitivity food from the vets (rcw sensitivity control is suitable for kittens and better than giving chicken) a couple days on just a diet like that should see improvement if diet related. But I personally would not advise diarrhoea for 2 weeks as being acceptable without trying or testing something.

Thanks very much for the replies and advice I'll get the RC sensitive today and try that out. He's eating and drinking ok just seems such a long time to have not had a solid stool.
Just to let you know I hand wash the dishes.

Has it just been vaccinated by any chance?

Meant to say with the two conditions I mentioned they generally remain bright and active.

He had his vaccinations a couple of weeks ago before we picked him up from breeders. I'm going to take him back to the vets Monday just wondered if anyone had any suggestions in interim. Thanks all

Have you spoken to the breeder?

Yeah I've gone out to breeder awaiting reply. I am going to get him to vets on Monday with a sample, if anything changes in meantime off course I'll take him to emergency out of hours.

Again thanks all for feedback - it's hard to focus sometimes when you are worried about them

It is great that you have sample. If poss collect three samples (which can all be put in the same pot) and take that in so they can send it off that day if they need to.

Laboratories get more accurate results from what they call a 3 day pooled sample!

I am a year down the line with one of my cats and can't get a solid stool out of him. Otherwise he is healthy and active. Have treated him for Giardia and other parasitic conditions, tried the sensitive food, herbal remedies etc. and no difference. Taking him back to the vet soon with another 3 day stool sample but not hopeful of getting a definite diagnosis.

Cats do get IBD. Has he had an ultrasound scan?

Thanks for the info I'll collect more samples to take.

Sorry to hear about your ongoing issue with your cat - must be miserable for them to have that for so long frown

My kitten had the same occasionally and I was told to feed him plain cooked chicken for a bit and he was back to normal in a couple of days. Could be worth a try in the interim.

Wife says she has been back in touch with you, but I've only just spotted this post. Is it Loki that you have? The kittens were all passing firm stools before they left, they were all regularly treated for Giardia before leaving, so hopefully it shouldn't be that. I do think that bengals often show stress with diarrhoea, hence why we advise all new owners to keep their kittens on the same food in their new home to reduce the impact of a change of environment, so try putting him on the raw food and the Royal Canin kitten food that was offered here. Feel free to email if you want further advice. Hope it is settling down for you.
oops just seen your original post saying was still on the raw and dry diet.

Hi the vet yes it is Loki and Gail has been in touch and very helpful! Since he's been on medicine he's no longer got blood in stools but still nothing solid so far. Our vet is treating him for giardia, he's very happy in himself and full of energy and vet is delighted with his health etc. So we just need to get his tummy sorted - still feeding him as advised. Thanks for the reply
