Nocturnal barking

Why, just why?

Is this some sort of guarding thing while the rest of the household is asleep?

In older dogs I believe it can be a sign of dementia, or perhaps failing eyesight/hearing.

Certainly Joe as he got older (and he was 12 when I adopted him) would pace, whine and occasionally bark at night. I put him on a supplement designed for aging dogs, and it certainly seemed to help him.

Yes this is about it. I don't like to ignore too much because occasionally it's the "I need to visit the garden" bark. Sometimes it's hard to know which is which.

Depends on the breed as well. Some guards will bark at night just to say they are on duty to any predators...
