There's always the Schengen Agreement. Well, sometimes.

Will you call him Manuel?

We were on vacation in Spain, in the communal pool at 08:30. This little kitten strolled over and sat beneath one of the sunbeds. He kept his eye on us and when we left the pool he followed. We (I) tried to scoot him off with some water, and on returning to my wife and explaining he wouldn't be back, she helpfully pointed out the small black kitten that was following me totally unphased. Plan A had failed

Plan C nobody turned up so find a cat shelter, we were going home in 2 days but what a good way to spend vacation. After a few attempts find shelter, by this time we had fed the poor little bugger and in return he had sat on our laps, climbed up and done the eye contact thing ( hypnosis) and shared a few fleas. Oh well

Took him to the shelter, nice enough place, left him and donation. Informed that as friendly as he was, he probably wouldn't be adopted as he was black. ( we knew they wouldn't put him down, but we were putting him into potentially a life sentence) but he would be better off than roaming the streets where he would have no chance of a life

My guess is there was some kind of "Lassie Come Home" style escape, and just they were about to leave for home, little Juan jumped onto the bonnet of their car.

We went back, decided to sponsor him. Left him at the shelter. But by the time we had arrived back the phone call had been made, cat hotels found. The potential of ownership was getting unavoidable. Back to Belgium, visit cat hotel ( we aren't always home). Check out concerns about his quality of life and decided that it has to be better than a shelter.
4 weeks later a flight to Spain to pick up what turned out to be a poorly kitten.
Back to Belgium, get him to the vets, thought the worse, and thought about how unfair it would be after all he had been through if it was a serious illness.
Results from vet Ok, he just needs treatment for a couple of weeks.
We are so happy, he's a really affectionate and becoming more active each day as the medicines kick in
