Hi all,

Our Male Rottweiler Flash is 18 months old and has been in the wars a bit.

He has had Hot Spot twice now which is a pain as he needs to be put in a lamp shade which he really isn't happy about. Both times his hot spot was near his neck. Nothing found there when it was treated.

He lost a toe nail after some exuberent running around.

He recently had a lump on his leg, we had to wait 2 weeks for it to be chopped out today but this last weekend it got quite angry, started to smell and was the size of a 50p piece.

Once removed they found lots of smaller lumps around the same area. The lump could be grabbed, squeezed and generally messed with and cause no pain even till the end. He just wanted to chew it. I was surprised at how big the scar is....

3 days with no walks and up to 10 with very small ones will not please him, he's a very athletic Rotweiler and only yesterday went for a 10 mile walk with me and was running around throughout.

Has anyone had anything similar?

He has great fur, a huge apetite, is up to date with worming and jabs etc and is doing well on his raw diet eating about 2.5 kilos a day. He's currently a svelte 44 kilos with 3 ribs showing and is full of energy. Good teeth, no smelly breath and generally a happy dog.

Is there a way to boost his immune system or is he just an unlucky bugger?

The lumps are getting sent away for analysis so if it's anything sinister that will be dealt with but any advice or experiences will be great, he isn't a happy boy being put under house arrest.

Dave!

MIL's collie had lots of bumps....these seem to have sorted it...but it took a while (and £) to find something that worked. Renewed carpets, biopsies, allergy tests.
Hope this helps

He has mixed veg, from peppers to peas, carrots, onion etc etc.
Natures menu mince, normally tripe and chicken or lamb.
Heart, a mix of a local farm shops dog food which has liver, kidney, skirt etc.

He has one large cup of heart, 3 large cups of the mince and a level cup of the veg. Alternates between raw egg (including shell) and a fish oil.

He snacks on lamb ribs, turkey necks, duck necks and the odd lamb spine.

Breakfast, a snack for lunch, then the same as breakfast for dinner.

I hope it's relatively simple to fix and he is just allergic to something.

Will have to wait for results but if you see any lumps don't ever be tempted to squeeze excessively etc. Some types of tumours can release histamine when aggravated causing them to spread.

Hot spots are very common on rotties (and retrievers!) not much you can do to prevent them except grooming to reduce coat thickness and keep dry and clean more easily and keep weight down to prevent a lot of skin etc round the neck! and be vigilant so you can catch a treat them quickly.

I think you are doing fine just a bit unlucky and I'm sure the results will be fine.

onions are very bad for dogs. Google onion and dogs to find out why.

^^good spot! Yes stop the onions, even garlic can have negative effects (which a lot of people give their animals) Though I believe toxic dose of garlic is higher compared to onions.

hmm, have you given him every vaccine under the sun recently? If so, please consider a titre test in future.

Do his parents/grandparents have a history of similar conditions?

Thanks for mentioning the titre test, never heard of it before but as I was due to get Monza vaccinated today I did a quick google...he's now getting a titre test done first (he's got various allergy issues). Thanks again.

You are more than welcome.

Also look into the vaccination schedules to see just how long they actually last - no need for annual boosters.

Only lepto and parainfluenza annual as they are bacterial. Others every 3yrs.

Generally it is an irritated spot of skin (eg flea bite, insect bite anything really that can cause the skin to inflame and thus feel hot.) that becomes intensely itchy causing the dog to scratch the area. This turns into a small patch wet eczema.

He has just had his normal vaccinations from puppy stage.

He's walking fine on his leg but only on a lead in the garden so he can go to the toilet, he's positively raring to go for a walk.

your rottie walks 10 miles?

jaysus, ours will hardly walk round the block without laying down and refusing to move - he thinks its funny.

he's a total knobhead though... and we love him to bits.

thank fully no lumps but he did recently do his ACL and thanks to insurance we didn't have to pay the £3500 bill....

good luck
