Without war and peace..............

Daughter (8) is obsessed about getting a hamster (yes I know she may tire of it but anyway)
She and her brother live with me 50/50
When kids not with me, I do like to go out and play and often go away with work so am not always at home to feed it and understand it does need fresh food and fresh water twice daily
Holidays are ok as we can find someone to look after it for a week, though there will be times when kids are away and so am I....
There is a local company called Impawtant Friends that feeds cats and dogs nad walks them and stuff so I have emailed them and asked them if they do ad-hoc stuff.
I'm also thinking of getting a cleaning lady and may ask if she does extras redface)

Am I about to attempt something stupid here and end up with a dead Humphrey on my hands which would obviously be a PR disaster

Not found any automatic feeders for small animals either.....?

Any experience would be appreciated

I've had a dwarf previously. Water was topped up weekly. They may like daily feeding but it's not essential as they just stockpile any extra food in their bed. So if you're going away for a few days just give them enough to carry on. Anything longer than that and it's probably best to board/leave with someone to look after. Mine survived for over 2.5 years and was still quite active until he decided not to wake up one day.

The hamsters I've had could certainly be left for a few days with a water bottle and food. It does need to be a bottle though as they will upturn bowls in the cages.

One thing to bear in mind is that they pee everywhere. I started with the cages with lots of plastic tubes all around and within a day these became quite unpleasantly sticky with wee and required almost daily washing. I swapped to a much bigger cage, without the tubing and then used toilet rolls for tubes which proved far less smelly.
