My freshwater planted nano tank project
Discussion
Some really nice tanks here and growth seems to have gone well too.
I've been reading this thread for a while with interest. I already have a 180l fish tank but couldn't resist and just started my own planted tank but trying the dry start method (DSM) which seems easier from my research. Got a Marina LED 38l 50x25x30 not quite nano but still small. Will also be a shrimp tank not no plans for any fish…for now

Mine isn't making any progress at the moment. I've had my dwarf hairgrass in for six weeks and it hasn't grown at all. In that time I've added a powerhead and tripled my liquid Co2 to no avail.
Today I've added another three pots (about eight in total now) and have taken a different approach. Previously I seperated then into three or four strands and then trimmed it to about 20mm immediately after planting.
This time I've used bigger clumps and won't trim it until it has rooted properly.
New hairgrass next to old stuff.
Hopefully it will grow this time!

Heh, I just plonked my hair grass into the gravel in its pot. I'm planning to order some more soon and then I'm going to have a go at what you've done putting clumps in. Did you use any tools or just poke it into the gravel with your finger and hope it doesn't come free?
I planted it with tweezers. The first batch was about 10mm deep which isnt enough and it keeps uprooting. I planted yesterday's batch an inch deep and it is much more secure. You could use your finger but I didn't want to mess up my substrate layers.
I initially bought 5 quite large red shrimps, and I think they were all female due to the size and colour I chose - no little ones appeared in 6 months which was another slight clue.
We really wanted them to breed and support their own little colony. So I added 10 more of various sizes and completeness of red colour, and now they are breeding like benefit scroungers with a broken 60 inch TV and games console. I will need to keep an eye on them, and swap a few in and out to mix up the gene pool or I guess I will have a lot of brown shrimps a few generations downstream.
Starting on bumblebee shrimps soon, a little more cantankerous around water quality I hear but nice to look at. I am finding the shrimps a lot more interesting than fish these days, even if they do eat all the eggs of my celestial pearl danios in the tank with them

Make a colony in a new tank, why not? Make a Danio paradise and a shrimp paradise
Heh heh, That was a similar, original purpose for the tank they are in. I would use any new tank to encourage spawnings and put the parents back in to their tank ASAP afterwards as they will eat their own eggs (and hatchlings) too.The tank the shrimps are in was originally used for raising fish fry. We popped in some shrimps and CPDs in it after getting fed up with the hassle of raising and transporting fry. It is now a heavily planted shrimp nano, with a few CPDs for fishy moves around the plants. The other tank is community and not suitable for either species, although the Amanos hold their own ok. We don't really have room for another tank, the missus is running out of room for useful things like Buddhas and elephants!
We didn't really expect the CPDs to breed, but we have had at least 4 spawnings that we have noticed to date, all nibbled away by shrimps, snails and their own parents probably. It's a vicious fish eat fish world in there
