Macavity lost his tail. Unexplained tail injury exacerbated by a mistake by the on call vet (compression bandage, our vet hit the roof when he saw it). We were terribly upset, it was an awesome tail. He made a full recovery, though.

I am sure Sam may end up like Macavity, although Thursday is D day. He's happy and the swelling has gone down and its a definitive snap in the tail. Its not really affecting him as such. He cleans it and I pinched the end about half hour ago and he meowed, so he may have some feeling there, but no control on what it does. I will say whats happens on Thursday !! fingers/ paws crossed.

My brothers cat had a similar accident.

The vet had no choice but to amputate the tail and warned that the ability to toilet may be affected.

For ten weeks they had to massage the cats belly to allow it to urinate. A milking like procedure.

The vet was doubtful of recovery and at one point suggested putting her down.

However suddenly all was well and the delightful little lady lived to a fine old age with no further complications.

Be patient and hopefully all will be well.

She never had any problems with balance or jumping etc. Soon adjusted.

Hope all works out well for you.

Hi.
Sadly my cat with the amputated tail has had issues with 'toilet' as above. I noticed about a month or so ago that she was off her food. After changing the food and all the usual stuff you might do she went to the vet. She was found to be badly dehydrated, and badly constipated. Regretfully she was put down, as it was felt there was little chance of recovery and a long and happy life.
I'm sorry to bring bad news to this generally upbeat thread. Even more sorry not to have the cat.

Best of luck with yours.

Looking like its coming off. At £300 , is a bit more reasonable than the huge costs others have paid. I will also get his teeth cleaned while under , although I need to speak to the wife to clarify when we are having it done. It wont change him as such, he such a happy mog. He bounced on our bed at 3am this morning and I could hear him purring from the other end and I am a bit deaf !

Well, I dont believe in miracles, regardless of the popes intervention with Mother Theresa recently, but we decided to monitor his tail and considered its removal in January. It will be cold and we wont be at home during the day , so allowing Sam quiet time to recuperate and flower pot on his head. But, his tail has partially come back to life. He can keep his tail up, swish it back and forth , from well after the break, which is still there. He murdered a bird the other day, which he quit killing , since the incident. He also has feeling in the tail, if you pinch it a bit. So, we're are pretty gobsmacked at this partial recovery and hope that it continues. My mother , who adores Same, could see his tail kink and even refused to touch his tail recently as she felt so sorry for him, but she is now just as happy with him as we are. Weird but true.....
