Dexter is now so incredibly agitated about not being able to go outside
He sits and cries and cries at the doors/windows, and I feel terrible!
I think where he settled in literally immediately, making the place his own in no time at all, he's now more than ready to take it to the outside!
The cats home advised us four weeks before we let him go outside. It's been two now (on Monday) and I'm not sure there's any way at all we can make it to four weeks. He is very stressed about wanting to be able to go out.
We are torn about what to do. What do you think in your experiences? Go for it? Wait some more? I was thinking about trying a harness so we could take him into the garden without the fear that he'll vault a fence and never be seen again.
He was neutered 5 weeks ago for info.
Personally I would put some money into maling your garden into a safe outdoor enviroment for Dexter. There are some decent solutions in the UK that Will keep him in and other cats out. He sits and cries and cries at the doors/windows, and I feel terrible!

I did think about it but it's a bit extreme for my tastes. My parents had cats from when I was about 5 and still do today, and they've always been allowed to go beyond the boundaries of the property, and they've never had any issues with non-returning cats. I did consider doing something as a temporary measure but am loathe to put a sizeable chunk of money to doing that and then removing it!
Take him out with a harness first if you're really worried, or don't feed him and then let him out.
He knows where he lives and he knows where the food is, cats are really very good at this and I am certain he'll not run off.
They do sometimes clear off for several hours exploring the area and playing cat chess with the various new cats they'll meet, but he'll come back when he wants to eat/sleep.

This. Before he eats let him out. Leave the door open and have his food waiting. He'll be back He knows where he lives and he knows where the food is, cats are really very good at this and I am certain he'll not run off.

"cat chess" - love that phrase, describes it perfectly!
My Mum moved 20 odd miles out of Suburbia into the countryside.
Her 6 cats spent the first night in the new garage and let out the next day into the wilderness.
Fav food left out right at the garage door and door left open.
No issues at all apart from 3 dead Rabbits, about 10 mice and various stand offs with the local Pheasant population in the 1st 2 days.
Cheers folks. We grabbed a harness today and knew within seconds that it was going to be a non starter. No way he was staying in that if he wanted out.
We're going to give it until next weekend - he'll have been here three weeks by then and been neutered for six weeks. He's spraying every now and then in the house and I'm hoping once he's out and starts marking the garden as his own, this will subside.

It's a trap!
Belly rubs are only available from 2 of the 4 we have. One actively rolls over and wants it, one is happy either way, one is just too shy for fusses generally and one actively invites and then closes the trap
Have you established whether this is an acceptable activity yet? Or is it too soon for experimentation? (Though he appears to have settled in magnificently!)

Oh yes he absolutely laps it up. When he's in the mood he'll happily be picked up, on his back on your lap and sit there and take it for as long as you're willing to provide it!It's a trap!

But approach at your own peril whilst playing with him with string/toys...when he's in play/hunt mode it's a brave fellow that goes near head or belly!!
He's very agitated about not being able to go outside and is not shy about telling us....he has one more week of being confined to the indoors then he can go outside next weekend!
