If you Google 'whippet rescue' you will get various results. Sorry, I'm not familiar with any Scottish rescues to be able to recommend.

Another thing possibly worth trying is greyhound/sighthound rescues (there are plenty of these) because they do sometimes get whippets or whippet crosses in.

Bristol, 6yrs and 15 maths, 1 cat and another whippet. I am.being picky that I don't want a whippet cross but we are also limited due to kids, cat etc, I am after a puppy as a result 6maths and under. However I am keeping in regular contact with a whippet rescue group so should happen eventually smile

thank you for the offer could be useful smile

We have a 13 year old border collie (Kesh) and a 3 month old Jack Russell/Patterdale cross. We lost our Lurcher (Doris) last year at 12 years old. Out of the 3 of them I'd have a lurcher again would never have another collie as a pet- they can run for 30 miles in a day so you can't give them enough exercise in my opinion and I reserve judgement on the JR/Patterdale cross. As an earlier poster said Jack's are tough, brave and cheeky and will try to be top dog even at 1.5 kgs in weight. They need very firm discipline or behaviours will be set for life.

The reason I would definitely have another lurcher is nature based. They are lovely, gentle dogs with the added bonus of being equally happy sleeping as charging around after rabbits!

We have a cavalier king charles and she's 14 months old now. Great dogs, lively enough but happy to curl up and go to sleep if you're not in the mood for playing.

Need to be aware of the breed related health issues but thats the case for most pedigree breeds. All you can do is reduce the risk by getting one with fully health tested parents etc.
Wonderful adorable dogs with zero hangups. But like you say the health issues.

Every labradoodle I have ever met is just bouncy and nutty.

Quite a bit of scare mongering in here, trust me I'm under no illusions what it takes to bring a dog to the family, it's a big commitment and as near as you could get to having a child in the house. As I've said in my opening post I've grown up around dogs with my parents and my grandparents so again I am under no illusions on how big a commitment it is.

The cavalier King Charles that we had all had their own health issues, one had the dreaded luxating patella, one ended up diabetic and the last one we had ended up diabetic and had cancer.

Buster, the last one we had, we adopted him when he was 5/6 years old from and old man that was in and out of hospital with his own health issues and was going to have him put in a dog home as none of his family would take him and to this day I have no idea why!! When we took him he was really fat and so relaxed, he just used to sleep all the time and would never get excited. but after a few weeks we managed to get his weigh down by regular walking and a good diet and he just completely transformed into the most wonderful thing with such a fantastic personality, we had him for 5 years when he was eventually diagnosed with Diabetes, no problem we gave him insulin jabs every day and paid for whatever care he needed as he eventually went blind. Then a year after that he was diagnosed with cancer and after consulting a lot with the vet, he clearly was in no visible pain and his personality not once subsided. He was an absolute fighter until the very end and I loved that dog so much and I hate to say this as the other 2 were great but Buster was just amazing and to this day absolutely miss him as he was such a great dog!

The reason I'm happy on the idea of getting a dog is because I loved the bond I had with all three of ours and it's such a rewarding experience. Had a st day at work? Then your pal at home is always happy to see you no matter what. I love that.

Sorry but I fail to see where the scaremongering is??

I think everyone has just tried to be helpful in your query and offering knowledge of the breeds they have and all very truthful. Isn't that what you were after?

Good luck in your search.

Me neither confused

All I can see is recommendations of potentially suitable breeds, a question about what you want from a dog and what you can offer them (perfectly reasonable if you expect people to suggest suitable breeds), a suggestion that you look into rescue dogs and some personal experiences of the breeds you mention.

Have seen something that may (or may not) interest you, and have sent you a message, but apparently the messaging function is not working 100%?

Bugger, I thought it was only an intermittent issue. Any ideas how to get info to me without me publicising private info? Whilst I would trust most on here I still want to be cautious!

Apologies to OP for the thread hijack!

Firstly I should say that it's a private rehoming in the freeads, so not from a rescue centre. That said, it looks like it might meet your requirements. I can post the ad here or if Mark still has both our email addresses (and is happy to do so), I am happy for him to give you mine and I will reply with the details. Won't be until tomorrow though as I can't send emails right now.

Depending on where you live have you considered puppy walking for Guide Dogs or being a temp home/boarder for an older trained guide dog? Gives you OH the full experience of 'doggies' without the issues of full on ownership.

Not having any success with email option (thanks anyway Mark) so here is link to ad https://www.gumtree.com/p/dogs/female-whippet-5-mo...

It's a bit ambiguous, so you would need to check re dog/cat/child compatibility....

Worth a shot maybe.
