Afternoon all,

We have a new puppy which came with 5weeks Kennel Club insurance, as that time is coming to an end the OH is firm on the fact that we should have cover.

Does anyone have any insurers they'd recommend? Otherwise I'll just do the usual comparison of a few etc.

The generally considered good one is Pet Plan. A Lot of vets have agreements with them so you don't have to pay up front and claim back whereas with the majority of others, you'll have to pay first then claim later.

We went with Petplan also after doing the comparisons - we didn't extend the KC one she came with.

The only one I've seen consistently recommended on dog forums is Pet Plan.

That's who we have the whippets insured with. We have no complaints about their service, and we have made claims. They're not the cheapest but are widely regarded as the best.

One thing you should do is make sure you get a 'for life' policy, with a decent level of cover. There is a useful comparison table here:

Think I'm with Petplan for Lottie, KC wanted stupid money I think and half the cover for similar money. Definitely worth shopping around.

Just make sure it's a lifetime policy and a true one, not 12 months per condition and always ask them to explain variable excess even if they don't divulge at first when it would come in.

Also check if covered for dental cover, out of hours vet fees, and that they dont have any exclusions regarding breed specific conditions, not all specialists (pet only cover) will be on comparison web sites, also exclusion period for new policy eg, 14 days before covered for illness, hope this helps

Good shopping

Used petplan for our Husky, and they've been pretty good.
