Looking for a handheld type vacuum - mainly for doing the stairs or the sofa or somewhere the cats have decided to sleep and deposit their fur!

Won't be the only vacuum in the house - we have an upright Dyson for that but need something small that we can just grab and use.

Obvious option seems to be the DC58 handheld from Dyson but it's £170 - anyone got something else that does a good job with pet fur?

I've got a Dyson V6 Absolute, and use it for Husky fur. It's brilliant, and I use it more than my other, full size one. I haven't used my upright in the 6 or so months I've had the V6. Pricey, but absolutely worth it!

If there's one thing I've learned from buying domestic appliances, its that buying cheap invariably means buying twice.

A couple of years ago, we bought a VAX pet hoover to deal with the aftermath of our long-haired Jack Russel. Despite pleas from my wife, I insisted that the Dyson equivalents were a waste of money. And yet, after six months' rigorous use, the VAX gave up the ghost (the belt drive broke) and I ended up buying the Dyson offering for almost twice the price.

Two years later however, it keeps on doing its thing, no matter how many times our cleaner bashes it off things.

Same with blenders: I'v been through two cheap blenders in the space of a year; bought a Nutribullet thing and its been unstoppable.

TVs? I bought a top of the range Panasonic 50" Plasma thingy almost ten years ago. Despite enduring six house moves (two of which where overseas), it continues to deliver a pin-sharp picture. It's bombproof.

Get the Dyson.

As above, get a Dyson, they roll on for a very long time but even when they go out of warranty the Dyson repair scheme is well worth a call; IIRC I rang up about a dead motor on an upright and when they came out they replaced not only the motor but also any parts that were broken or about to be - I ended up with a virtually new machine for about £50.

Yeah our upright is an old Dyson - had it rebuilt a couple of times!

Great service but a bit of a pain to have to get it out everytime you want to hoover the sofa or stairs

The V6 or new V8) is an awesome bit of kit. so much so that I bought one for my house, and then the OH's parents bought one for theirs!

THIS!!! My mum bought the handheld Gtec one recently, its bloody amazing, genuinely the best bit of household kit I have seen & used in years. Its compact, has more suction than a we in the houses of parliment, the little roller brush thing is actually brilliant. The adverts would put me off but actually using it is something else.

I was genuinely amazed by it & am looking to buy one to replace our full size vax which is st in comparison.

Costco seem cheaper again, and appear to have all of the heads.

I got mine from there 6 months ago, and paid over £100 more. Grr.

I have a Dyson DC58, cracking bit of kit.
I would say it is worth it but it is easy to part me and my money whistle
